I took my car to this crap shop to replace the wheel bearing. after that was done, they tried to put the axle nut back on and it wouldn't go on.

It looks like the threads were ruined and he had a hard time putting the axle nut back on. He evenutally got it on after an hour of filing the threads. Now when I look at it, it looks like the nut has come out a little bit.

Do I need the replace the whole hub assembly or can I buy a new axle with a new nut to fix the problem. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Buy a new axle (which comes with the nut). If the axle nut isn't on tight, this will prematurely wear out your wheel bearings. This happened to me when the treads on my axle were damaged and couldn't put the nut on all the way.

I would pitch a bitch to the owner of the shop that you got the work done and have them pay for the parts and installation of a new axle if they are to blame.Ultimately,you will definitely run into the issue of the shop denying that they are to blame.I would say that from now on if you take your car to any shop,take pictures before and after the work is done to play it safe.
