On the forward balance shaft, there's an obvious timing mark on the shaft itself. On the rear, remove the sealing bolt and insert an M6x100mm bolt to lock the balance shaft in place. You can tell when you have the balance shaft in the right spot. When you insert the 6mm bolt, it'll only move a few degrees in each direction. The Helms manual shows exactly what you need to do.

the sealing bolt is on the back of the block, it has a 12mm head.

Be careful with the front shaft, there is an arrow on the oil pump and a line on the pulley, but they're not at the top

here's a pic.

On the 5Gen (H22A4), the timing mark is on the top side balance shaft itself. There is a corresponding mark on the oil pump housing. Reference page 6-18 in the 97-99 Helms manual.

One of the best things that you can do is download a pdf of the shop manual for your car. It will give you all of this info and more, step by step instructions, torque specs, any special tools needed etc.

hey there, I’m trying to replace my front balance shaft seal on an H22A4 2000 PRELUDE. I was wondering what the bolt coming out from the shaft holding the belt in place came out from?

woukd I just be able to take that bolt out and the gear and than slip on the balance shaft seal? Is TDC needed to do this?

thanks a lot I’m in a pickle!
