89 4dr issues!
i just put a used motor in it. its a dual point with an auto trany. I replaced the main relay and my car seems to be ok till it warms up then i will be cruising and it will fall on its face. it seems to lose power but it only lasts a little while it will go back to normal and will do it on and off all the way home. i can put it in neutral and sometimes it will rev and go away but most of the time it wont. it revs low and slow floored it will only go up a thousand or so if u pulse it it goes a lil higher. ive tried 3 distributors, 2 ecus, the fuel pump was replaced by the previous owner, fuel filters new, tried changing the main injector cause old one was making a buzzing noise when i first turned the key, it has new ngk plugs and wires and also a new o2 sensor which is the only code it threw and throws after driving. please i hope someone can help its got me and my friend stumped. any suggestions will be appreciated thanks

Re: 89 4dr issues! (sit22 II)
the only code is 1. my book says thats an o2 sensor code and ive already replaced the o2 sensor. also sometimes at idle ill try to rev it and it sounds like it hits a rev limiter then try again and it will be gone

Have you checked exhaust components for restrictions? Install a vacuum gauge on a engine vacuum source and rev the engine. If the vacuum drops to 0 psi, you have an exhaust restriction. You can buy an vacuum gauge at autozone or napa.

the exhaust is open until an ebay muffler and theres a vacuum diaphram on the back side of the intake and it operates when i rev the motor so i assume i have vacuum

Did you replace the main relay with honda new or just a used one? If you have a code 16 present the check engine light may not come on. Turn the ignition key on count the led blinks on the ecu. If your not aware on how to do that already. also there is a tsb for a ground wire on your Throttle position sensor ground wire for rough idle. You could also try replacing you throttle position sensor. Here's the Honda tsb

CIVIC
Applicable To
SEE VEHICLES
AFFECTED
Occasional Rough Idle
SYMPTOM
1. The engine may occasionally idle roughly or erratically after coming to a stop with the throttle fully-closed.
2. On 1990-91 cars equipped with automatic transmission: Even though the proper procedure is followed, the shift interlock system may occasionally prevent the driver from shifting out of Park.
VEHICLES AFFECTED
All 1988-91 Civic models equipped with 1.5 liter engine and dual-point injection, thru VIN:
1HGED3...ML011574 (Sedan)
2HGED6...MH512869 (Hatchback)
JHMED3...MS031565 (Sedan)
JHMED8...MS012826 (CRX DX)
JHMEE2...MS004778 (2WD Wagon)
PROBABLE CAUSE
Inadequate grounding of the throttle angle sensor circuit.
CORRECTIVE ACTION
Replace the existing ground wire with the new ground harness listed under PARTS INFORMATION.
1. Disconnect the three-pin connector from the throttle angle sensor.
2. Remove the GRN/WHT wire from the three-pin connector with Pin Tool E, T/N 07JAZ-002050A, from the Terminal Pin Repair Kit (see TOOL INFORMATION).
3. Cut off the GRN/WHT wire as close as possible to the gray tape wrapping the wire harness. Discard the cut off piece.
4. Install the terminal end of the new ground harness into the three-pin connector. Gently pull on the wire to insure the pin is securely locked in the connector.
5. Route the new harness under the existing harness. Hold the harnesses together by wrapping them with 3M 33+ high-temperature electrical tape or equivalent. Wrap the tape as shown, making sure it completely covers the gray tape and any exposed end of the GRN/WHT wire.
6. Remove the bolt holding the harness bracket to the intake manifold. Install the eyelet on the new harness between the bracket and the manifold and reinstall the bolt.
NOTE: The harness eyelet must be installed as explained above. If it is installed between the bolt head and the bracket, the symptoms may not be corrected.
7. Reconnect the three-pin connector to the throttle angle sensor.
8. Test drive the car. Verify that it idles smoothly and at the proper speed.

Do you have fuel pressure? Maybe your fuel pump heats up and quits working after a while. disconnect a fuel line going to the throttle body and out it in a pop bottle and have a buddy turn the key. see if a good stream of gas goes in. Or you could try a new fuel pressure regulator. Its on the left side of the throttle body. It has a little rubber vacuum hose attacthed to it. We need to make sure the basics are working properly. You need Fuel air and spark. Have you also looked at the ignition coil to see if it's burnt? Just suggetions.. Let us know

Besides reading up on it there should be a torque convertor lockup solenoid somewhere. I'm not too sure about the automatics. Your gonna have to look into it.

make sure all you sensors are pluged in the right place. there are like 4 plugs on that car that are the same. and can be pluged in the wrong place.so check out a car that is running good and see how the plus hook up.

Re: 89 4dr issues! (beige89civic)
well my roommate and i got curious this morning because the previous owners said they replaced the fuel pump them selfs. so we dropped the tank to check and see if maybe they put it in wrong or something. we get it out and first thing we see is rust in the tank , on the pump, basket, pick up tube/filter everywhere so hopefully this is my problem
