When buying a transmission from a junkyard .. ?
When buying a transmission from a junkyard, do I require papers? I want to play it safe and get the VIN #'s such. I don't really want to get pulled over and have the cop find out I dont have any VIN #'s on my transmission.
How would I go about buying a tranny from a junkyard? (I never done it before so I want to play it safe)

when i do tranny swaps at work i dont even swap the vin plates over, your supposed to but nobody does

I wouldn't worry about it. I doubt senor popo is going to look at teh tranny.
But one thing, look at the odometer and get a lower miles one.

OH, man thanks for the odometer advice, alright. I'm just trying to play it safe because you know, when they dont have a reason to give you a ticket, they try to find reasons!
I'll be sure to look at a odometer, is there a way to know if the clutch isn't burned or not?

Only if the car runs.
But if I was swapping a tranny, I'd replace the clutch/flywheel and throwout bearing and input shaft bearing just because all of it's easy to do once the tranny is off.
Much better to have all of that taken care of instead of having a fresh tranny with a throwout bearing that's about to crap.
You can get the flywheel resurfaced or buy a new one.
I got an exedy oe replacement and 8lb flywheel for ~$200 shipped from gripforce clutches on ebay. I like the setup a lot.
Most honda specific shops will do the bearings/clutch/tranny install for $250
I got mine installed like the above for a steal price of $206 at Tokyo speed pros in Phoenix, AZ.

Shouldn't be hard, I've read the DIY's about them because you know, i tend to search before i post so I wouldn't get a big flamefest going on. And I have friends that could possibly help me. Wish me luck on finding a good transmission. It's just I'm worried about spending all that money on a D Series, I'm not sure if it would be worth it you know.
200$ for new tranny parts
then maybe the junkyard may charge me 50-100$
then I'll have to convert to stick, which may take me up to 100$ if i talk to my friends for spare parts.
that can get me half way up to a b16 or something. ;]
Any recommended transmission for my dseries? It's a D16Y7 (ew non-vtec i know) I may just swap the head while I'm at it.

sweet, any tranny will do? i'm looking for more power. my goal is probably a 200 HP sohc boost. (maybe) i'm not sure at all, i'm pretty sure i'll be disappointed and want to shoot up to 300 HP.
i'm not really sure if 300 hp on a sohc is an easy task, so i may have second thoughts. i should probably do more research.

i see that u are in CA...the CHP will look at that vin on the tranny... look back in the archives..someone got sent to the state ref for having no vin on tranny..

tampering with a vin plate is a misdemenor, so how the hell do you transfer a vin plate?

Definitely make sure you talk w/some people who are actually in CA and know what they are talking about before you do this...From what I've read, the rules out there are very different...

i have a 97 ls block at my house that i am going to start building. It -has two forms of id's The engines, engine stamp, and the personal vin number that's attached near the front lower part of the block right above the pan. I take it you can take the vin off the block, since it has the engine code, and other engine vin stamped into the block. also what can i use to extract the engine vin tag?

i say the best thing you can do is call the CHP and tell them, you need a new tranny, and you are going to get one from a junk yard.
then ask them what is required to make it legal. they should tell you. whether is just getting the paperwork, or having to register it, whatever.
i dont know cali laws, but if you ask them, unless everyone in cali is a complete dick, they should tell you how to do it the right way.
