Re: leak down test or compression test (humboldt_skim)
first do a compression test and get numbers. then do a leak down test. it is when you add some oil into the spark plug hole and it will temporary seal the piston rings. and if you still have the same compression numbers that means your head is bad. if your numbers go up that means your rings are bad. please correct me if im wrong

not quite... but you're getting there
yes, compression test first. but a leakdown is a bit more than an oily compression test.
a leakdown is a little more invasive, you have to pull the rocker arm assembly off of the head and get pistons at TDC (any two at TDC, thus the other two at BDC) it's true that you should put a small amount of oil in the cylinder to help the ring seal. then you connect a leakdown tester to the sparkplug hole. the leakdown tester typically looks like a small metal block witha gage, and two air hose ports. compressed air comes in one side and pressurizes the cylinder. the gage indicates the percentage of leakage. it'll have ranges of good fair and poor on the face of the gage.
if the leak is bad, you can usually hear it coming from the tail pipe or the intake if the valves are the source of the leak. otherwise rings or headgasket...
