D16 vs b16

D16 vs b16
okay, so im building my engine first for my project, and i plan to put it in a 92-95 civic either hatch or coupe, which ever is available to me at the time... but i was wondering if anyone has any advice or input on the engine selection... this is the way i look at it:
D16- its easy to find, cheaper, easy to deal with, SOHC, but less power
B16- DOHC, more money, harder to fix, more to worry bout, but more power
i would like to turbo the car... i believe the compressions on the Bs are lower which would be better i suppose..but money is a big factor... any comments or thoughts towards the power outputs and gains, anything to really be concerned with when it comes down to the bottom line of it all?
i guess what im asking is, is the extra money and potential repair money worth the power of the B?
not only that, but i havent checked the prices yet of internals and other compaitable parts, but is the B priced alot higher than the D?

here's a thought save for a b16 swap, you can find them for like $1300. SAve a little more and buy a b18b/c or a b20 and build that slowly... swap it in later. That's what im doing haha

thanks for the replies everyone... hopefully i can find a B16 somewhere.
i used to have a 95 civic ex, and i wrecked it before i got to do anything to it. i had always planned on droppin a B in it... but i have seen some pretty quick Ds -thats why i asked... how are the trannys in the Bs? im pretty rough on my toys and just wanna know what i need to do to prepare myself for a good, reliable build...
****lol alright so after i had posted here i went over to honda civic forum.com and they all said go with the D... i know it is my choice as some one mentioned above, but im still just lookin for a bit of guidance... im not looking to build no super car with 5 or 6 hundred horsepower... i dont have the time money or resources for that, im aiming at a 200+ to a 300 hp car... id be overly joyed with those results... and i would like it to be somewhat reliable... ****

i agree with this guy cuz same thing im doing. I drove a d16 crx...hatch...and i have my b16 coupe....save up for the b16 and boosted. in the end, it will be worth it and better off than the d. I also have my ek under construction b20v turbo....but money is a huge factor...so taking it slow.

Man U FTW
Here's how it works out:
B Series
Good
-More potential
-Handles 300whp with ease in stock form
-More parts following
-Larger displacement = more power streetably
Bad
-More expensive
D Series
Good
-Cheap!!
-Easily available
-Cheap to build (Vitara/TT)
Bad
-Less of a parts following
-Much weaker in stock form (240whp max on stock rods)
-Smaller displacement
If you have a D, use the D. If you dont have either, do whichever your budget allows. Personally, i would snag an LS and use that. When money allows, get a VTEC head for it. That's the cheapest B series route....

D SERIES ALL DAY!
Bull crap. You B16 guys think u are the sh*t. B16s are strong but not all that If u ask me the pretty slow for the hype about them out there.. I've seen plenty of d15bs and d16as run on them like water in a river with no boost at all, jus all motor baby. Like the other guy said, the only difference is the extra camshaft, thats it. Same liter as a d16 but just has bigger fuel injectors, different MAPS, higher stroke, higher compression etcs...etc. I have a JDM SPEC 96 OBD2 D15B on 5lbs of boost runnin 191 hp and 175 lbs TQ on dyno. And i only spent 500 on the turbo set up. I'm runnin on stock 2006-08 SI's, SER's, and b16s all day. People swear and always think i have a DOHC Vtec but im Single Cam I am.

you also forget to mention that b16's have an extra like 800 rpms. motor for motor a b16 would rape a d16z6. b16's don't weight that much more you get a higher rpm range, a WAAAAY better geared transmission, etc. etc. but any ways congrats your modified piece of turd d15 pulls on stock si's, ser's, and b16s.. you forget to mention that mod for mod a b16 on 5lbs of boost would leave you smelling exhaust fumes. :-P
to the OP heres how you can look at it... you can get a sohc and spend about as much money as it would cost to get a dohc swap to make it a **** hair faster then a dohc but where do you go from there? sohc motors are not as responsive to upgrades as say a b16 or a b18. the initial cost of a dohc is going to be greater but if its a project and you are looking to put some time and more money into it further down the road you will be alot happier with the power you can get out of the b16 with upgrades. because once you max out that turd sohc your going to be wanting a different motor again. ya dig?
b16 > d16
any day of the week, unless it was my girlfriends car and all she wanted to do was have a gas sipping econo box
lol newbs helping newbs great stuff :-)
