Broken Wheel Stud...cant get lugnut off
The other day I was swapping on my other wheels before going to the track and of course on the last wheel the last lug would not come off just keeps spinning in either direction. My guess is that the lug crossthreaded onto the stud resulting in a stripped stud and lug nut. Well replacing the stud is not my problem but its getting the #%$@ wheel off I had 3 of my buddies pull the wheel with all of thier weight as I went at it with an impact gun and still nothin. So my buddy over at discount tire referred me to this muffler shop since he sends his discount tire customers there in situations like this. Well I get a call back from the shop and they cant get it off either. They told me that going at the lugnut with an impact hammer would just flatten out the bits since the lug is not aluminum so I'll either have to destroy and replace my wheel(kinda hard to do since my wheel has been discontinued a few years back and its hard to find) or find another shop that knows some trick that they dont.
Well the lug(steel lug ) is still threaded practically all the way in and it is impossible to hack it off without damaging the wheel. You guys have any ideas as to what I can do without destroying my wheel?? I would appreciate any help greatly
CLIFF NOTES: lug is prolly crossthreaded onto the stud, cant get lugnut and wheel off myself, referred shop cant take it off either what do I do??

are the lugs sunk into the rim??...can you get clear access to the sides on the lug??...I would think you would be able to get it off without messing up the rim...its only a matter of time...have you tryed grabbing the sides of the lug with a set of vicegrips...if you can get a set on there try pulling back away from the rim while you are turning it off....you might just be able to catch a thread and get it to turn off...good luck!!!!

Damn that sucks ***.
Here is my suggestion:
on the side with the damaged stud, take off the entire suspenstion assembly.
Disassemble every part, until you can get to the wheel stud from the back. get a drill, and just drill from the back. so that the wheel stud is no longer connect to the rotor.
That is the only thing I can come up with.

Yea the lugs are sunk into the rim unfortunatley....and I dont really have much room to work with in order to get a set of vicegrips on the lug I appreciate the help though
Taking apart the suspension(is that possible without taking the wheel off?) is prolly my last resort before I destroy the wheel....looks like that is what I may have to do

Is there anyway to drill the stud out of the lugnut? You might be able to just drill out enough of the stud that it will collapse or break. A friend had a problem similar to this and thats how he got his off....granted it took us hours to do it, just buy some really really good drill bits....hope this helps.

keep on yanking on the wheel, I had the same thing happen, I think a shop tightened the lug too tight and stipped it so the lug would just keep turning and not come off. Is the wheel still tight or does it move a bit with just the one lug thats stuck? I got mine off by pushing and pulled on the wheel till it finally stripped the bolt right off, just keep trying.

Dunno if this would work but you could try getting a good chissel (sp?) and get a big *** hammer. Put the chissel on the lugnut and try to crack it. Hit from different angles and ****.

Re: Broken Wheel Stud...cant get lugnut off (Boost Pressure)
happened to my friend, we used an air chisel, hammer and some really sharp chisels and after bout an hour and a half the lug was completely split and we could take the wheel off. Other than that i don't know if you can get to the lugs from the back if you can that would be easier and yes you can take off the suspension with the wheel still on.

No idea of where to get it, but I've heard of using liquid nitrogen to freeze the lug. Then a few whacks with a hammer & chisle should shatter it.

i just used an impact gun to get my **** off. We had to move the impact gun up and down and side to side, but eventually, the lug will break. Then just replace it.

Re: Broken Wheel Stud,..[need help skunk2 stud install (Steve Berman)
Actually I finally got it off I just haven't had much time to post how. I appreciate all of the help and suggestions you guys gave me but none of them really worked too well in my situation lol. After taking a closer look me and my friend noticed that the entire stud was spinning with the lugnut(splines were gone) so the only thing we were able to do is to jam a prybar behind the hub into the stud(just BARELY fit) to keep it from spinning while we took an impact gun and spun the lugnut.....2 hours later that bitch came out, I was soo releived when it came out. Now its time to get a new hub and wheel bearing ...

You all spend too much time on this nonsense. New studs are about $3 at an auto parts store and take about 15 minutes to put in.
Put a long bar on the lugnut going up towards you as you stand. Hold bar on nut. Beat bar with big hammer until it breaks off.
Worked for me in about 5 minutes on my dads truck.
