today on the way home from school i notcied loud loud knocking. it started last night. not very loud. but idle was lower than usual, substantially. id hit something in the road and assumed it was my exhaust. Anyways, i went to school this morning, a little louder, again thought it was exhaust. Today after school. Either valve and piston are damaged by timing belt slipping and causing everything to be out of sync... Timing belt must be really worn.
OR
YOu broke a piston rings.

Go check your oil, sounds like you fried the engine running it with no oil. Probably punctured the oil pan with the thing you hit in the road. Sorry more than likely you have screwed that engine pretty badly, but remember: everything is salvageable with the right amount of money.

If it was knocking real bad and then it died and wouldn't run again, added to the "white smoke" coming from your valve cover, I'd say you probably either cracked a sleeve (if the knocking was bad enough), ruptured the head gasket (and maybe hydrolocked) or cracked the head (valve/piston contact ).
What does the rancid smell smell like? How thick and cloudy is the white smoke from your valve cover? Are you sure it's not blue? Can you describe the knocking sound better? Will it crank at all? Do your accessories work?
Get back to us with more info. Good luck.

A knock that rapidly progresses and causes a loss of power is usually a rod knock. The loud clunk and puff of smoke may have been the rod being thrown. Like the others said, pull the motor apart and inspect it. Inspect the outside of the block for cracks or holes where the rod may have come through.

That would be your starter turning the no-compression bottom end...therefore you have accomplished absolute 0. I agree that it sounds like rod knock. Were you watching the pistons when it happened? Were they all moving? Did one of them look busted (the rod, not the piston)?

Re: (daklown)
my money is on a broken rod... did you check the block all around and make sure there are no holes??? Also, remove the spark plugs, stick thin dowel rod down, and turn the motor, the rod should move up and down in every cylinder, meaning the piston is working

so what happens when i push a dowel down a cylinder with a broken rod ?
so say a rod is broken, and i didnt penetrate the block, could i skate by with rods and new pistons if my cylinder wall is somehow okay ? and, what are the odds that it is ok ?
