i have a tapping sound coming from my motor and i'm not really sure what it is or where it's coming from. here's the story of what happened..

i recently got my exhaust installed and while i was under there i noticed some oil leaking from the oil pan. i didn't really think anything of it because i was going to change my oil the next day. that night i got a little pissed (parents getting on my case about school) and i left my house and beat on my car pretty bad. after driving down the street i hear the tapping sound develop. i quickly drive home and check my oil only to see that it's pretty low...actually there's not even any oil on the dipstick. i filled it up but the tapping still continues...

now i know it was pretty stupid to do that but the mistake is already made. so far i've noticed that it doesn't tap until the engine warms up and gets faster as i rev the motor higher. i haven't driven the car in 4 days, only turned it on to check if the tapping still exists. at idle (after motor warms up) you can hear constant, consistant tapping. i'm not really sure what it is. i've read it could be rods or valves. i've also read it could possibly be the exhaust leaking which could be very likely but it sounds like it's coming from the head. from cold startup nothing is heard. what could it be? just in need of a valve adjustment?

sorry for the long *** post but i just wanted to be as detailed as possible to figure out what i should do. i'm going to have to start driving the car tommorow since my brother will be back and i won't be able to drive his car. any help is appreciated! TIA.

alright. so the car drives pretty much the same. so most likely it's the valves?

BUMP! i need help people! oh btw it's a stock d16y7 with 108k miles on it.

I dunno man. Use a long screwdriver and see if you can listen and find where its coming from. If its constant, even at idle, but worse on a load, you might have spun a bearing. I did the same with my B16. Got drunk one night, didnt realize it was low on oil, beat the **** out of it all the way home and a nice knock the next morning.

Hopefully it is only your valves.

i was hoping it wasn't a spun bearing any other ideas people?

i actually checked again today and it sounds like it might be coming from the block guess it's time for the swap. how long can i drive it like this?

Probably for a while, still sounds like a valve problem tho not a bearing
