If you reset the ECU and the CEL immediately comes back on with the new distributor then it's probably a bad connection in the connector or wiring harness for the distributor.

Re: CEL problem on 90 DA
This sounded strange to me so I googled obd0 codes and clicked on 5 links...
1 link (g2ic teg tips) said code 6 is crank sensor (dizzy)
The rest of them said code 6 is ECT (coolant temp)
Then I got off my lazy *** and grabbed a haynes manual from the garage. It also says ECT.

He's right, since yours is a '90 it's OBD0, I also saw ECT, Engine Coolant Temperature. I'm guessing that it comes on when you overheat. Can you verify that? Let the car idle for ~15 mins or take a drive, does the coolant temperature get passed the middle on the gauge?

Re: CEL problem on 90 DA
To check the ECT:
-Get the engine to full operating temp (t-stat open, fan cycles on a couple times)
-Turn off car
-Unplug ECT
-Use an ohmmeter and measure the resistance between the 2 terminals on the sensor.
-If resistance isn't between 200-400 ohms, the sensor is bad.
To check the circuit wiring:
-With the sensor still unplugged, turn the key to ON but don't start the car.
-Measure the voltage between the terminals in the plug on the HARNESS side.
-There should be 5 volts.
-If not 5 volts, there's a problem in the circuit wiring or the PCM itself.

It will come on when there is a problem, it wont stay on. Your overheating for some reason. The ECU should store the last 3 codes before it's reset though. I would flush your cooling system, air bubbles in the coolant system can cause over heating too.

the temp needle is always in the normal operating temperature..right in the middle...i just did a coolant flush a month ago..

Re: CEL problem on 90 DA
There can still be air bubbles in the lines. I'm pretty sure the ECT sensor acts like the oil pressure sensor, it comes on when there is a problem then goes out when it's fine. The sensor is getting hot from somewhere or is shorting out.

its a new sensor....how can i fix this? or how can i get the air bubbles out..but if it was overheating then why is the temp needle fine?

Re: CEL problem on 90 DA
ok so i got my bros multimeter and got 5V out the harness plug...then measured the resistance on the sensor and got a little over 200....so reset the ECU twice still getting CEL while driving

Re: CEL problem on 90 DA
FCM- Would the ECT not be considered an emission control? I figure it is since the ecu needs to see the right temp to run closed loop?
It seems to me if 5 volts is getting to the sensor and the sensor is new, the only part of the circuit that could be bad is the ECU.
I know air bubbles can do strange things, but I would think if that were the issue, there'd be other problems with overheating, sending unit, heater temp, iacv, etc.

I do agree that it can also be a problem with the ecu/ecm, mainly because of the code 6 still showing up, it does make sense, ECTS is good but still getting code.
I would ask, is the code being cleared properly? 94
