Default Is $1750 an OK price for an engine install?

I would like to open the thread by stating I am a 100% novice when it comes to cars. I try to listen & figure a few things out here & there, but for the most part I don't know much at all about what goes on under the hood of a car. I'm a car stereo guy, not a motor head.

I have never had a full engine install done before. I have a long depressing story, but I'll sum it up by saying I've done head jobs on my car twice, and now I am going in for a 3rd. In a row. It's almost midnight & I will share more details tomorrow, but what I am needing to know now, is $1750 an OK price to have a used engine installed in my car? The used motor has roughly 135,000 miles on it.

The other option the mechanic gave me was a head job, I quickly jotted down a few things he listed that I'm sure you guys can make sense of, much more so than me anyways. Remove head, valve guides/seals, rebuild head, pistons, replace rings, deglaze (I think was the word) cylinders, rod bearings, main bearings. For this he asked for roughly $2,250.

Any other information or details you guys need, let me know. Otherwise I'm just looking for simple yes or no, as far as is this a decent price. Also, obviously I will ask him myself, but what type of warranty SHOULD come on a used motor? I mean the thing has 135k miles, should I fully expect that it burns zero oil & runs as 100% new? There has to be a big grey area here I imagine...

Thank you guys for your time.

I wish you were closer. but if you can find a good backyard mechanic it should be a 500 dollar job.
i mean 1700 is a bit high, try another place.

is that with the motor included?

its not the best price but it def isn't a rip off if they do it properly.

find some reviews on the shop before going ahead for it

No, a good running LS(B18B, non vtec) motor, at least in my area, costs less than $500 and an install would be $800 in labor including fluids.

Try to look for either a performance shop that has experience in it or another mechanic who will do the full job for less.

Usually the going rate is $300 for removal and $300 for install. So $600 in total, give or take...

$1700 or anywhere near that price is a ripoff.

I usually charge $500 for a job like this, plus another $500 for a mild wire tuck

yeah now that i actually think about it a motor with 135,000 on it already is pretty pricey for that much, i see labor around 600 to 800 and then the price of the motor. which you really should do the research on that motor they are talking about replacing it wtih

Yes, that is the price of the motor & the install. It is my first time at this mechanic, and I've tried to look up some reviews online but there doesn't seem to be any. They sound friendly, but they all sound friendly when they know they're talking to a novice.

I have been having a hell of a time finding a good mechanic. Any place I go wants to do these big jobs, I can only imagine they all just lick their chops seeing me walk in the door. Hearing about my background with this car & the bad luck I've had, it's gotta be an easy slice of the pie to get in on. Not to say that's what's happening, but I wouldn't be suprised.

I guess I can tell him that I'll come pick my car up & think about it for a while, and see what else I can come up with in the mean time. Does anybody have any recommendations on where, or how to find a good mechanic??

It is a 2000 LS. Nothing fancy, as I said before, I'm more interested in the stereo than the motor or how fast it goes.

700 max for a low mileage jdm b18b, 500 installation = $1200+ 100 bux max for fluids, belts etc...

1700 is a complete rip off

This should be the only option.
