D16 Turbo Smoking during idle question
Ok so I boosted my single cam, but after 2 weeks I noticed the car started smoking when I started. The smoke is blue so it's oil. After Driving around I could smell burning oil, but I see no smoke. After that day I haven't seen smoke, only very little sometimes, but I can still smell the smoke. I'm running a T3, FMIC, Missing link, stock injectors, Vortec FMU 12:1. I checked the IC piping and no oil in there, the blow off valve has no signs of oil coming out. Turbo has no oil leaking through and turbo has like no shaft play. I did disconnect the breather from the crank case to the manifold and return line has no kinks. The only thing I can think of is valve stem seals since it's not smoking while I drive, but I can still smell it. I'm kinda stuck, any input is greatly appreciated. I'm yet to check compression though, but seeing what you guys think..

make sure your oil return port is facing down. If not it will create excess pressure buiuldup in the housing and cause it to back up and leak.

could be the fmu, could be the small injector and the power level. you could have leaking valve seals but also might have put a hair line fracture in a piston. My b-series did the same thing and eventually cracked a few pistons after a run at the track. Have you tried a leak down test?
see what a compression test yet shows

Re: D16 Turbo Smoking during idle question
then it could be your turbo aswell. Slight cracks can create a leak and while you accelerate, your exhaust gasses are leaving faster so you might not see the small oil leak. Check what urbansi said aswell.

we built my buddy a very budget a6 and ebay turbo set up in his crx, his would huff when he came to a stop after a pull and some times at idle, we made a home made oil line restrictor with a hole that is .060 and it now smokes about 1/3 as much.

ebay turbos are a hit or miss. my boys doing 290 on 18lbs and full ebay setup running great surprisingly but then i have others who have blown theirs. either way, 95% of ebay companies dont actually test their products for reliability or performance.

Re: D16 Turbo Smoking during idle question
Hi, My D16w1 in my UK Honda H-RV with 114,000 miles on the clock was burning oil for about 10 months and was progressively getting worse, burning in the end about one imperial gallon every month and a half. Not enough money to do a strip down and rebuild initially so i tried to do the cheapest and easiest fault finding and fixes first. Compressions were ok wet and dry. Changed stem seals with head on the block with a special tool that cost me £50!, but it was still burning oil. Accompanied with the oil burn was a missfire between 3000-3500 rpm at the beginning to 3000 -4000 rpm at the end with slight and i mean only slight blue smoke which indicated to me that i should not be burning so much oil. Removed pcv valve and blocked pipes as i read on a few forums that this could reduce consumption?.. Still burning oil at a rapid rate. Burnt a valve out about three weeks ago so it was off with the head for a look. There was oil in the head at No4 cylinder exhaust oultlet and in the manifold at no4 only. An exhaust valve was burnt out on Number 4 cylinder so took the head to an engine reconditioner to check for any cracks in the head and fit valves/seats guides if required. No cracks and stem guides ok and not worn, all that was needed were new exhaust valves x8. So, while the head was off i dropped the sump and took out the pistons. Rings visibly ok as were the bores. Bores miked up were spot on 75mm at various points with the cross hatch honing marks from manufacture still visible. The pistons were checked and cleaned at the engineering company and they were re-ringed and within spec with no wear?????
So, no real reason/indication where the oil burn was coming from????
Time for rebuild.
Went to remove the old gasket from the inlet manifold and it was stuck solid to the manifold and very hard/ brittle. Right next to Number 4 cylinder there is a water hole and next to it another drilling in the head which is covered with oil when engine is running but blanked off/not used/redundant on the inlet manifold side. On removal of the gasket i could see oil had been tracking under the brittle/hard gasket straight into No4 cylinder and over time had hot spotted the valve and burnt it out.
So all you D16 owners with oil burn Check out the inlet gasket before it gets any worse and you have to do a strip down.
This was my experience of a quite common problem with D16 honda engines with very little info of a definitve fix on the internet.
Hope it`s of some help.
Owen....
Ps When checking valve clearences i noticed the engineering company had put green inlet stem seals on the exhaust valves. Is this OK as i do not want to do these again.
Cheers,
