No oil in filter when changing?

No oil in filter when changing?
I have a built B17 84mm making a little under 700whp. The car has about 2000 miles and has seen the track a few times. I have noticed that when I change the oil in this car there is no oil in the filter. On most Honda's that I have changed the oil starts running down as soon as it separates from the block. I am using a K&N oil filter and seeing 80-85 psi on start up. Is this normal?

Re: No oil in filter when changing?
I have talked to some people that work on other import engines and they think that the oil is running back into the pan. The car has always taken a few seconds on morning startups to build oil pressure. I think that the oil is loosing its prime. Can this be possible?

The K&N HP-1004 does have an anti-drainback valve. You should be able to see it looking through the oil inlet holes. An anti-drainback valve will hold some oil in the cansiter to help lubricate the valve train upon starting. However, since it is not a tight seal, over time oil will still drain back to the sump.

if you let the car sit for more then 30-40 min before taking the filter off...this will happen it all drains back into the block. its normal. run the car....then take filter off directly after...oil will come out.

Re: No oil in filter when changing?
I have tried different oil filters, like oem, fram, and bosch, they all do the same. I have worked on many honda's and never seen this before. Normally when I change the oil on honda's, oil will run down the back of the block while I am screwing it off, but not on this car.
Here is another thing. Every time I crank the car after it has been sitting over night or a few days, the oil pressure acts like I just changed the oil. If that makes sense. It takes a few seconds for it to build pressure, then goes right up to 80-85psi. Now if I let the car sit for a few mins-hours it builds pressure like instanty.
What I am trying to get at is that the car is loosing prime and I would like to know why?

Re: No oil in filter when changing?
use a factory filter, problem solved. fram filters suck, their anti-drain back valve does not work. i have personally seen 3 of them collapse, causing loss of oil pressure. i can take a honda filter off a car that has not been started in 2 weeks and oil pours from it.

I was trying out different filters to see if they made a different, but on my cars I just K&N or oem. I don't think it is a problem with the drain back valve. I think it has something to do with the engine. I believe I could take the same filter and put it on another honda and it will be just fine.

Re: No oil in filter when changing?
i work for honda and have done about a million oil changes it feels like. and i have had many cars sit on a rack for about 45min to an hour before i actually drained it and nothing leaked out. on customer cars and my own cars. thats all im saying.
im not saying there is NO oil in the filter...i can take the filter and POOR some oil out but there is not enough in there for it to poor oil while the filter is only sideways.

Re: No oil in filter when changing?
In all the years that I have been doing oil changes in my Honda's, which is since my first one in 1982, a Civic FE. Most time no oil comes out when I pull the filter.
I have used Fram and a few others for most of my 40 years of doing my own oil changes. Never had a issue with a Fram.
I must be missing something, when I walk through the pits at a NRHA event. I notice a lot of Fram filters on the cars. If Fram was that bad why would they be using it ? If in fact Fram was that bad, how come Honda has there filters made by them ? I hear Fram makes Subaru's oil filters too.

Well this car, it is like there is almost nothing in the filter. I can flip it over right after i pull it off the car and nothing comes out.
My main concern in the oil system loosing prime, which should have been my question above. I thought it was the filter at first until the others did the same thing.

I cut open a new honda filter and it was built just like the old ones, metal caps etc. Fram may be building them but they are built to honda specs.
The fram race filters are not any where near the orange filter junk and have a way more expensive price tag.

Thats just an Orange fram canister with a replaceable SS mesh cartridge in it. Not a paper everyday fram. Im sure you already know that tho.

Re: No oil in filter when changing?
I was thinking that the priming issue could because of loose clearance in the oil pump, but then again I have good oil pressure. I am going to try a different gauge this weekend and see if that changes anything.

No, lot's of Class cars run them as well as car's at the Shakedown at Etown.
