Default Integra on jack stands, no load, making horrible noise and shaking the motor/tranny.

I posted this in the transmission forum but Drag Racing gets way more traffic...so i figured id try it in here....

Ill try to describe this the best way i can...

I blew up a diff in my stock LS tranny. Car is making 700+hp. Has been a 10.70@142 on a bone stock LS trans. Well, put a new diff in the stock trans and checked everything out and it seemed good. Had a Honda Tech that is the tranny guy for Appleway Honda here in Spokane come by and check it out and said everything looked good. Put the tranny in and with the car on jack stands in gear, it made a horrible chunking sound coming from the diff area. Never went and drove it. So picked up another bone stock LS tranny that came out of a good running car. Put it in and getting the same thing. Start off in 1st gear and its fine, 2nd is fine, 3rd starts to make some noise and shake the motor, 4th is worse, and 5th is really bad. This is at idle with no load. Was the same on both trannys. Went out and drove it and it drives absolutely fine. No noise, no nothing. So its just when its in the air with no load on it. I tried changing both axles and mid shaft. Im completely lost and never seen this issue. Its on a Comp twin disc and checked everything out every time i pulled it out. Everything on that looks good. It seems the faster the diff is spinning the more noise it makes but its just at idle. If you rev it up and put it under a load everything seems fine. Any ideas?

Just took it on a 60 mile drive and didnt have 1 single issue or noise. Shifts perfectly at 9500RPM. It does seem to be better after the drive. But there is no axle binding while its in the air, no brake dragging issues....everything is in perfect working order. Heres a vid of the noise while its in 5th gear.

Definitely not a TOB, i put one of those in in betweeen the tranny changes to a brand new one. The "old" one that had 900 miles on it was in good shape as well. The noise is very predominant in the diff area of the tranny. But i appreciate the reply man.

did you spin the diff after the install to ensure that it wasnt making contact with anything at all. some people shave the fins around the rotation area to ensure there is no contact.

ill guarantee if you pull it apart you will know exactly what the issue is.

bottom line is the tranny needs to be dropped again so just pull it apart and inspect man

unless i missed it, tranny 1 that you rebuilt is making noise and tranny 2 which is stock never opened is making same noise?? very high chances both trans have same issure.. maybe its somethings else. were are the jack stands? un the suspension componets or pinch seam? maybe the suspension droop is causing CV to hit something?

are you doing this with the CV axles hanging down unsupported? you know you shouldnt run them like that, it's not like running a rear wheel drive car with a rear end on stands, I know people who have exploded CV axles doing this

If you took it on a 60 mile ride with no noise and no shifting or drivabilitly issues, what exactly is the problem??? im kind of not following you here.

Yes...tranny number 1 was checked over by a Honda dealership tranny tech. Spun the diff in both sides of the case. Everything is perfect. Before i actually put the 2nd tranny in, i pulled the 1st one out and back apart and checked everything back over again, Had 2 different tranny guys that do transmission for a living look over it and aside from very slight wear on 3rd gear, everything was given a thumbs up.

The 2nd tranny was pulled from an 80k mile 98 integra. Drove that car around for about 50 miles before purchasing. I know theres no issues with that one.

exactly, I think the inner cv axle was at an extreme angle, and was making a bunch of noise, if they are hanging down while the car is up in the air, this is the equivalent of the angle they would see if the car was airborne

The axle spin very free with no binding. Ive checked all that out. Like i said...it seems as though it only makes the noise when there is absolutely no load on it. Ive got buddy club racing spec coil overs and when in the air, they only drop maybe an inch when its in the air. And when im laying under the car, on both trannys, with a stethoscope, its coming from the tranny. Its just weird that it does it on both trannys and only when in the air. Ive heard of a couple of other people having the issue and never affected the life of the tranny so im just gonna roll with it.

sounds like starter not disengaging hitting the flywheel.

Crank the car and then remove the starter while its running

louder from the gear casing or the bell housing with a stethoscope? Have you checked the flywheel bolts just in case?

I had a similar noise with mine in the air too. I watched the axle and it was flopping around. The Diff in my trans is screwed. With my axle fully seated you can wiggle the inner shaft ~1/4" up and down. I pulled the axle out and the spider gear could be wiggled up and down by fingers... The guy I purchased the tranny said there were no issues, which i believe it was probably fine just driving around, bu in the air with no load on the axle it highlights the issue.

Flywheel bolts are all good. Its not an RPM related noise. Its actually very inconsistent. Ive swapped out axles and mid shaft. There is little not no wiggle room in the axle. Its definitely not a motor issue. With the car out of gear there is no noise. Motor runs fine. Definitely not a rod knock though.

If 2 trannysdo it I would start looking at axles, clutch and motor, out of all those things the only one that would be different when jacked up would be the axles , try putting the jack stands on the control arms so the suspension sits as it would on the ground, I know you say it only drops an inch, but I would still try it

Pull the axles and do the same test. See if it still makes noise....

^^^^next step obviuosly, but did you measure out your tolerance when replacing the diff? Could be rattling around in there, making the noise.

Defiantly sounds like metal to metal contact. When you drained the trans fluid from the first transmission that made this noise did you notice anything? Come out clean?

Its a stock open diff. I tried putting the jack stands on the suspension so it was still on the weight of the car. Still the same noise. No metal in the fluid. Had the car back on the dyno yesterday and made 716whp at 26lbs. not one single noise or issue.

Yeah...im not even worried about it anymore. But it would still be nice to have some kind of answer as to what would be causing the noise lol. But yeah...no noise at all unless its up in the air. Driving, the dyno, the track, everything is fine lol.
