Braking an axle at speed =?
Now that my cars got some decent jam (639whp) i'm starting to get concerned about braking axles wile driving. The car is street driving maybe 200 kms a week and is running a slightly touched gsr tranny ( mfactory lsd, carbon synchros, new bearing) also STOCK AXLES. I don't care about braking axles at the starting line of a track as i have 5 or so extra sets. What i'm more concerned about is what happens if you brake an axle under load doing 100mph or so with some drag radials ( 225 50 15 mt et street 2)... does this happen? I've searched endlessly and have came up dry... does it make a snap sound and you pull over calmly... does the axle brake and spin around and destroy your car? or does your car violently pull to one side and you die...
Does anyone have experience with this? Would a stock axle snap with a drag radial being put under power in 4th with 600+whp..
any comments, advice or stories are more then welcome.
thanks a lot

Oh no, it's actually quite violent and there are videos of this. Prepare to go full lock the opposite direction and pray you are lucky to come out just kissing the wall.

I had one break b4 with the same drag radials your running..on the street spun thru first shifted 2 second and snapped the passenger side axle in the diff and the part that broke of in the diff twisted and made it lock up the diff..luckily I wasnt goin that fast but it did still turn pretty violently..but as long as it is a clean break it shouldnt pull at all..

i have got axles to the point of shaking and vibrating under load on the street. i made the switch to DSS axles and wont look back.

it wont destroy your car itself, thats what the shock fork is there for, its a containment design. Always be prepared for a direction change under load.

No way you should snap an axle at speed. Launches and wheel hop are usually what kill axles. With that power even on 225/50/15 drag radials your going to spin well past 100mph anyways on the street. So unless you wheel hop, no way your going to break an axle in half just on sheer hp. Not a chance unless its just a weak shitty axle.

Chances are low but it is very possible.

I have broken so many axles at 60-100mph or so, I lost count. The two videos below even have such occasions on film.
The pass at 2:30 or so.
This one happens on the 2-3 shift.
I have done it once on the street, also. Actually killed the intermediate shaft on that one.

Ive broken 1 axle at speed in my old 240sx. car tried to swap ends and i was able to keep it out of the wall. definitely not a fun experience. honestly though i had pretty good luck with stock axles. Ive only broken 1 stock Honda axle, but Ive broken a few pairs of DSS 3.9 axles. YMMV Im sure kicking the clutch to force wheelspin at 100 mph wasn't to kind to the DSS axles. I would buy them again.
