hey guys, i have a jvc head unit and i just picked up a component set for the front and a set of 2-ways for the rear.
i do not plan on connecting a whole system, i just want the HU and speakers (ran through the stock wiring)
my question is...do i need to use the crossover or will the tweeters get blown if i dont?
and if i do use the crossovers, do they need to be connected to an amp? cuz i dont have/want an amp.

you can run it off the stock stereo...its best to use the crossovers you dont need a amp to run them but if u want the max performance out of them you should hook them up to a amp.........

umm thanks i guess...but you didnt really answer anything i was asking about, lol.
i dont want super performance, i just want the tweeters NOT to blow, if i dont use a crossover. thats what i wanted to know...can i run them safely without a crossover?

No...you need some type of crossover to protect the tweeter. A simple capacitor in line would suffice. The values are in micro-farads. (use from 4 to 10 microfarad.) This will be a simple high pass 6 db filter.

10 microfarad = 4000 hz
4 microfarad = 10,000 hz

i will ry to read up on whatever all that meant, but how come the oem tweeters dont blow if they are ran off the same mids with no crossovers?

Make/model of components please.
A capacitor run in series with the voice coil of the tweeter will cut out the lower frequencies and only pass the higher frequencies.
If you are skilled in electronics (which you probably aren't otherwise you would understand the capacitor thing, no offense) you can build a better high pass filter and run that. You can wiki high pass filter for more info.

if you bought them new and they didnt come with an external crossover they prob already have inline caps in them.

LoL...and I thought i was keeping it simple . The reason you typically don't blow the oem tweeters is because they have this type of crossover on them. It keeps the speaker from trying to play music (frequencies) that would destroy it. Depending on manufacture its either mounted on the speaker or in line in the wiring. (Take a look at the oem speaker...there may be what looks like a small round can attached to the speaker....this is the crossover)
