Default Troubleshooting: What are the Signs of a Failing VTEC solenoid?

What are some signs that the VTEC solenoid might be going bad or is bad?.

My problems are Vtec Engaging at 4300 RPM and Rev Limiter at 7.. No CEL Lights car runs great and the CEL does work.

The car everyonce in awhile may idle kinda funny. Going up to 1200rpm and back down real quick. Then staying perfect.

Someone suggested the VTEC solenoid might be bad.

B16A1..

Basic Upgrades. Ractive Intake, DC Header, 2.5 Catback

Centerforce Clutch.. Thats it..

Car ran a 15.53 out at a local track with a 2.6 60ft. My first time at the track.

Car seems to run fine. It hits Vtec Fine. Just watching the AutoMeter tach it cuts the car right off at 7200RPM.

Some were telling me its the Tach, but at 75MPH I should not be at 6500RPM (Tach says 5500). Its really bugging me but I am trying to figure it out.

Oil level is Fine.. ECU is the Correct ECU.. Alot of people thought it was the wrong ECU. But we pulled it out and checked it and it was right.

Its been doing it ever since the car has been running.

thats a high rpm (5500rpm) for 75mph, i hit 80mph and my tach reads 4800-5000. of course it could be different trannies and that i have a b17 which is pratically a stroked b16.

have you tried changing the filters in the vtec solenoid, maybe the screens are clogged.

I believe I am having problems too. When I hit vtec, I get a click noise. Perhaps the solenoid is bad atop the unit. Thoughts.

To clean the little screen you have to remove the whole vtec solenoid assembly, the whole unit that has three screws holding it onto the head, not just the top part. When you remove it watch out for oil pooring out.

There are three 10mm screws holding the lower part of the vtec solenoid onto the head. Look for these screws, you'll probably need a rachet with short extension to remove these screws.

This is what the whole vtec solenoid looks like, see the three holes where the 10mm screws go?

This is where the screen is, its in between the little rubber black gasket it comes out when you remove the gasket. You can use WD40 to clean the unit.

try checking your speed sensor if the clip fell out or its loose there wont be a checkengine light. It will still show your speedo working but when it jerks a little your vtec wont work. This has happened to me on a couple of cars hope this works for you.

I have tried a different distributor. Maybe check the negative terminal of the coil in the distributor to make sure it is not corroded. If you aren't getting a good rpm signal fromt he dizzy all sorts of stuff can go out of wack, eg tachs and vtec engagment.

I had a dizzy screw up my fuel cutoff and tach before.

Mine activates at 3000 rpm and then after that my engine idles at 1200 rpm up to 1500 rpm. But when I turn off the power from the key, it idles exactly where i want it to, at 900 rpm. What might be the problem sir? Anyone?

Need help please.
