What are you looking to achieve?
First thing I'll tell you, no replacement, for displacement.. when staying NA.

Yep, right on.
I still like the B16a, but its really just outdated. Not much to offer for NA anymore. Great budget foundation for a turbo street car @ 3-400, high hp but not quite enough torque to create the wheelspin issues with bigger cranks, 2.0 liters etc. Also makes a good power plant for a lightweight road race weekend warrior.

B16's you really need to spend alot on gearing to get them to perform,b18's and b20's are just torquey and gearing is not as much of an issue.

I was thinking about a stripped out eg hatch but didnt know if b16 or b18 would be best. 100% wanna stay all motor but im not looking for a million horse power, maybe 200? Or a little less?

Ultimately, a B16 can be built to produce the same power as a B18.
It will cost more and be less relaxing to drive though as it'll be revving much higher.

Re: B16 vs b18 pros cons anything else (im new here please dont hate)
In the process of a lsvtec build right now for my 99 ek, b18b1 short block pulled from the pick and pull,i kept the rods and went with oem b16 pistons acl main and rod bearings and thrust washer,b16 head stock rebuild still at the machine shop,em1 harness with ecu, 99 gsr stock cams, blox intake manifold, 97 gsr tranny.I still need to get exhaust system two mounts and front axles.I would say money wise i have around $1350.00 in it right now.Now this is a reliability build and not a high hp build just need a good daily driver.Another thing to consider is i did all the assembly and did not have to pay anyone to do it so that saved me some money.Hope this gives you an idea of ball park figure but not every build is the same.

A basic Ls Vtec done right with a stock B18B or B20 bottom end will cost you around $1500-2000 with everything you need block, Vtec head, rebuilding the head, IHE, trans, swap parts, tuning. If you want to put some P30 pistons in the motor then it will run a little more.

Since on a budget i'd say a GSR(b18c1) but I think OP want's LSV...either way a properly built LSV or GSR can see 200whp(or just under) with a stock block bolt on's+cams and a good tune and you should be able to hit that mark if the engine is healthy.

It would be pretty hard to hit 200whp with P72 or PR4 pistons, I am going to try to get as close as possible though . You would need to swap to some P30 or P73 pistons and run a good cam to get to 200whp.

I am looking into the same thing. I have basically settled on a b18c1 because its a sexy all around engine. But im gonna turbo mine too. The only question im having is, is there another engine in the series that will react better to a boost?

I am just gonna point something out. The phrase "I was thinking" ain't gonna get you far on this board. I seen a lot of people talk about building this and that but it never actually happens. I'm not saying thinking is a bad thing but less talk and more action. Try to be specific if you got a question about something and rather than being so general. You gonna get a whole lot better answers if you follow me...
