check engine light!
I've had the car for six days...
2002 EP3, 100,000 miles
Check engine light came on today so I had autozone pull the codes,
p1298 - Electrical Load Detector (ELD) Circuit High Voltage
p0420 - Catalyst System Efficiency Below Threshold
anybody experience these?, any help would be greatly appreciated

What are your mods? If you dont have a cat the second code is normal. If you dont have a cat what are you using to bypass the CEL, defouler? The first one could either be a blown alternator fuse or even worse and a bad ELD. How is the car running?

car is bone stock and runs perfectly fine, and engine light went off this morning, so confused but i guess it's good for now thanks for the help though

If it happens again, check this out...
Causes-- A code P0420 may mean that one or more of the following has happened:
Leaded fuel was used where unleaded was called for
An oxygen sensor is not reading (functioning) properly
The engine coolant temperature sensor is not working properly
Damaged exhaust manifold / catalytic converter / exhaust pipe
Retarded spark timing
Possible Solutions-- The simplest thing to do is to reset the code and see if it comes back.
Next step is to measure the voltage at the oxygen sensor on Bank 1 (the rear sensor, or the sensor after the converter). The voltage should be low and steady (~200mV, depends on the vehicle). If the voltage varies (e.g. 100mV to 600mV) then it's time to replace the catalytic converter. In fact, it would be a good idea to test each oxygen O2 sensor while you're at it.
One thing to note is that many vehicle manufacturers offer a longer warranty on emissions-related parts. So if you have a newer car but it's out of it's bumper-to-bumper warranty, there still may be warranty on this type of problem. Many manufacturers give a five year, unlimited mileage warranty on these items. It's worth checking into.

hey man i had the same problem dont trip eld honda makes a quick fix for that it cost 175 installed at your local shop or just order the big *** relay from honda it goes in the fuse box cat is normal 02 si go out fast soecial with high mileage

i know this is kinda old but i just had these same codes throw this morning too. same details too...105k miles i've had the car for 5 days, i found out some of the fuses were too high of an amperage in the hood fuse box so i fixed that and drove my car around after clearing the code and all is well for now. Im driving about 100 miles a day so if it throws the code again I am sure it'll happen really soon and I'll just update on here. There is no damn reason for a cat to go bad.

welp I let the engine warm up with both o2s unplugged the one before the cat was reading 0.09 volts steady and the one after the cat was reading 0.03 volts steady and from my understanding the one before the cat is actually a wideband which means it should be reading between 0 and 5 volts if i am not mistaken and fluctuating steadily which it was not. As it has been 105k miles and the battery is the honda oem battery i imagine so are the o2 sensors and so I bought the wide band o2 and it should be here before friday next week.
I also suspect since the voltage isn't 0 on the o2 therefore it technically isn't dead the 2nd code is most likely related to the o2 voltage being so low. Just a hunch this is the first time fooling with this car I'm not familiar with much else other than 4th gen civics.

I went ahead and got the Honda OEM 2002-2003 EP3 service manual. If anyone needs it let me know its pdf format. gas mileage blows, this weekend I will upload the pages that talk about these specific codes so anyone can fix up their car.

I just had the same codes for my 02 Si, my car has the Honda Care warranty so the ELD fuse was covered under that.
For the the P0420 code they had to replace the Cat. Initially Honda wanted $1,200 for the part(my car has 86,000) miles. The District Honda rep offer to pay 50% after i told the dealership that they should covered 100% cause the car qualified under the http://hondaodometerclassaction.com/
To my surprised after i send the Honda of Turnersville, NJ Genaral Manager an email complain, they step up and payed 100% of the cost of cat and labor.
So before you pay anything out of pocket call the dealrship and see if they willing to pay for the part and labor.

I lookedup the wiring diagram for the ECM plugs and found which wires send voltage signals to the ecm and just put an attachment to the wire part inside the plug and read it from the car seat.

My RSX-S is reading codes 1166 and 1167 as well.
I have replaced the primary 02, reset ECU and the light popped right back up (~ 10 seconds after start up). Anyone experienced this same problem?
Could it be a sensor? MAP,IAT, etc? Secondary 02?
Vac line somewhere? Exhaust leak? Clogged injector?
I keep the maintenance up on this car, along with my hatch.
1166 / 1167 doesn't tell exactly what the issue is, just a vague description (which I can't recall wording at this time) Something about air and fuel metering.
EDIT: It's a possible faulty a/f relay. I am going to try another relay tomorrow.
Many have replaced that 02 and been fine. I'm not so lucky I guess.
Car is getting a little less MPG, and while at a stop the RPM's will dip below 1k.

Well one by one, i replaced the relays by the glove box (resetting ECU each time) CEL popped right back up each time.
So I'm not sure where to go from here. Secondary? MAp?MAF?
Anyone gone through this?

Seems almost as I'm talking to myself, but maybe someone will chime in.
I replaced the Primary 02 Friday with a used ( ~ 60-70k) 02 from an 05 Type S. I reset the ECU, and no CEL.
Up until tonight I thought all was well. I had driven all weekend with no issue, then the light came on while heading home. I ran the code.
P1163 was what the scanner read.
I checked fuses I was recommended to check, checked various plugs, harnesses, and vac lines, also took the dirty air filter from the SRI and put a new one I had in the garage. I reset the ECU once again, drove it for about 10 minutes, no light.
I'm hoping it's fixed. If not, have any ideas as to what the deal is? Is it because the 02 is from and 05? Shouldn't be any different really, from an 02.

Ok, well. I got 1163 taken care of for a few days.
I checked fuses again, cleaned/ oiled k&n filter. CEL popped back up tonight. I haven't checked it yet, but this is getting frustrating.
Would the thermostat have anything to do with this? Any way it could be a sensor (way to check if it is?)

Signs are pointing to just shelling out the $ for a brand new 02 for the 02-04 RSX-S to solve the problem.

My Primary, Cat and 2nd o2 went bad over the past year I just replaced all of it at the same time, got rid of the cat and ran a defouler and everythings ship shape. Do a cat test, as mentioned above, and see if its just your cat thats giving you problems.
