2002 Type S - 200k miles -maintenance suggestions
Alright HT, my Type S has 205k miles now so I'm freshening it up some. We've of course replaced some parts over the cars lifetime, and I just received several boxes of parts but I wanted to see if I may be overlooking anything. I'll list what we've already replaced, and what I'll be replacing next week - if you see any missed opportunities, let me know.
Already replaced:
Pads/rotors
Spark plugs
Oil/filter - duh
Clutch slave cylinder
Ac compressor/lines/condenser/cabin filters
Oem motor mounts about 40-50k ago
Exedy organic Clutch About 50k miles ago
Power steering pump
Water pump
About to install:
Mugen SS suspension
All new suspension bushings (lca, end links, bump stops, etc)
All lock actuators
Headlights
Fog lights
Shifter bushings (went with the metal Twist bushings from kseriesparts)
Es motor mount inserts
I'll also be doing a valve adjustment.
The only mod on the car is an injen cai, I'll likely order an oem itr catback, dc race header, and reflash soon. After driving the car since dec 2001 stock except for the intake it should be nice to have a bit more power, and I'm jazzed to get rid of the stock suspension - its never been replaced this whole time.
Am I missing anything critical?

The mugen ss is a great setup but it drops the car just a little too much. I didn't see ball joints on any of your lists so I'd say pick up some hardrace extended ball joints to correct the front LCA angle from the mugen kit's drop. If you're axles are still stock make sure that they're still in good condition. I had a stock axle snap on me a few weeks ago going over a small pothole and I'm only at 185k. I didn't see trans flush on your list so if you haven't done that, do it ASAP and do it every 2 or 3 oil changes. Everything else looks good. Only other thing I can think of is if it's necessary to change the timing chain on k-series motors?

I'd highly suggest a dc5 itr rear sway bar/bushings, it'll really balance out the car's handling.
I bought mine from this place: http://www.icbmotorsport.com/jdmindc5tyrs.html

The DC5 Type-R 22mm rear sway is way overpriced. You can get a 05-06 RSX-S 21mm rear sway for as cheap as $30 used. Why pay more than double for a 1mm difference? If you really want to drop some money on a rear sway then just go all out and get a cusco 25mm

I hadnt even considered ball joints. The ball joints are still oem as they came on the car in 2001, as are the axles. I havent inspected the ball joints, but the axles still appear to be in great nick - no tears in the boots, no clicking, etc. I'll look into the hardrace ball joints.
The tranny oil has been changed at least 10 times since we bought the car, and to your point it was probably changed every 3 oil changes on average - most recently about 6k miles ago.
I am still considering the timing chain, its supposedly a life time part, but I know the tensioner can fail so I've been thinking about the skunk2 upgraded tensioner & a new chain. I'm just not sure if it's a wise or worthwhile investment. I'd like this motor to last as long as possible of course, but I definitely have my eye on a k24 swap in the future after this motor starts to get tired.
I'm hoping the mugen kit is worth the cost, after lots of reading it appeared to be the favored lowering kit for the dc5, and i appreciated that it came already assembled & was a direct swap. Hopefully we dont see any issues with axle bind or anything else.
At this point I'm trying to restore more then anything, this car has been & will remain a daily driver, and I am not interested in having an uber fast street machine. I just want to upgrade where it makes sense to improve the drivability.

If you do decide to do the timing chain and tensioner just get another OEM tensioner, I've heard too many stories about aftermarket tensioners failing.

True, I was thinking of the stock Ep3 rear bar. They did hike the price of the 22mm one since I got mine though...

if you look at the Operation Manual it states exactly what you should do. With that said, I would definitely check the axles on top of the current list you have developed.

DEFINITELY go with an oem chain tensioner. I always wondered at what mileage you're supposed to change the coil packs. I've never heard of anyone replacing them. Maybe they last forever lol i dunno.
