By-Pass Oil Filtration
I just got this from blackstone-labs(the people who test oil samples). Anyone ever hear of by-pass oil filtration systems before?
"By-pass filtration works differently. When this type of auxiliary system is installed, some of the sump oil by-passes the in-line filter system, passing continually though a by-pass filter and then returning to the oil sump. Using this method, sump oil is constantly being cleaned any time the engine is running, and it can be filtered down to a very fine size."
"After having run many tens of thousands of diesel engine oil samples, it is our opinion that a by-pass oil filtration system is one of the most important factors in extending oil drains. "

I was looking into a similar set-up, the Amsoil system a while ago. http://www.amsoil.com/products/bf.html
It looked like a great way to keep the oil/engine cleaner, this is used alot in commercial vehicles to save money and reduce wear. But I didn't know if the oil travelling to the bypass filter (no matter how slight) would affect the oil pressure. I was concerned that a slight drop in oil pressure could hurt something.
If there's no issues with too much oil pressure loss, I'd give the the bypass filter a try. But I don't know enough about it to gamble on my car.
I asked the same question but got no response.

Re: By-Pass Oil Filtration (jond)
Good info. I think most R owners avoid extended drain intervals mainly because of the 3000 mile oil change interval myth. We know that some higher end synthetic and synthetic blends can go 5000+ miles and still show a decent analysis depending on conditions (mainly street use). Track days, autox, etc will destroy all oils quicker so 5000 miles would be out of the question. I'm not even sure how long my intervals with 10w30 Shaeffer should be with many HPDEs planned this year, but only an oil analysis can help with that.
