This mild comparison was from my buddy Easton from another forum.. He owned an ITR and bought an Elise. Mind you this was a preliminary comparison since at that moment, he had yet to drive the Elise spiritedly..

The two biggest surprises of all?

First big surprise is this, steering is actually not as stiff and heavy as I was expecting. You completely forget that this car lacks power steering because it is in fact, about as firm as the Integra Type R. The steering wheel is loads smaller and the general feel of the drive is immensely different since you're sitting so amazingly low to the ground (seat is literally bolted onto the floor) with your legs stretched out. But steering feels incredibly similar to the Integra Type R. More of a tribute to the Type R rather than a poor thing about the Elise. Taking turns a bit more aggressively yields a result which has the Elise steering feel a bit better. It's only then that the differences become more obvious. And parking the car immediately reminds you that this is indeed manual steering.

I remember driving the S2 Lotus Exige, and the steering on that was immensely stiffer, harder and firmer. More communicative but a lot less easy to live with. The Elise is truly an amazing compromise. I used to think that Exige is for the track, and the Elise is for the road. But dare I say if the Exige has been made a little more compliant than it's possible to even say that the Exige is a weekend road car, and the Elise is a weekday daily drive. It's that good.

The second, and most unbelievable surprise of all - is the ride. I cannot believe i'm even saying this, but it's actually compliant - REALLY compliant. As in, besides the fact that you sit lower to the road, i'd say it's as compliant as the Integra Type R, and almost as compliant as the EVO X.
I will ask him for a more up-to-date comparison.

The Elise I drove was not nearly as compliant as an ITR, I don't think that's very accurate at all.

I was surprised to see his comment on the EVO X at the end. I find my X to be buckboard stiff. Like rattle your fillings out, stiff. I think a stock ITR has a much smoother ride than an EVO X. Then again he might be referring to an EVO X MR that sits 1/2 inch higher than a GSR and rides on smoother Bilsteins, rather than the GSR's super stiff Showa's.

Had much seat time in an Elise and ITR plus owned a AP2 S2000 and now have an Exige. Elise in comparison to the ITR well lets just say there is none. Beat in every category except for comfort and praciticality. However most Elise and exige are mostly supercharged so really doesnt even compare now. The 2zz is now discontinued and will be using some 1.6L but will be supercharged and the Exiges are gonna inherit the camry engine in the Evora.

I'm just curious; did Lotus ever fix the A/C in the Elise? The A/C in a Lotus Elise is total fail; at least in a desert climate. Not to mention they overheat in traffic during the summer. A friend of mine had to trade his Elise for a Porsche, due to the basically non-functional A/C.

Ive been in both and i have driven both.

I gotta say that both of them are truly amazing cars.
Ive always thought that the ITR was the most fun car I have ever driven but once i got in the seat of the Lotus and started driving around the parking lot (empty =]) a little hard i swear i was addicted.. In comparison its just as fun (or probably more/less fun depending on preferences) than an ITR.

Although its a great car, i'd still pick the ITR over the Lotus any day

Why? From most important to least

1) Price
2) Comfort/interior
3) Looks
4) Better Daily Drive

Dont get me wrong though, this is just for my preferences and what i use the car for. The Elise definitely feels more track oriented than the R when your inside driving it though.

I forgot to mention that the guy lives in Australia.. And the model he got was the 160hp version.. I'm not into Lotus cars, so I'm not very knowledgable about the different trims.

Ah, that could explain it. I have no idea how different the Australian version was.
