Default Got my head back today...few questions

I got my head back today from a local machine shop. Ended up needing 5 new intake valves, and 2 new exhaust valves. It got a complete valve job, new stock retainers, valve seals, and the new valves (Thanks Len!).

There are a couple things Im curious about, but the guys at the shop werent all that welcoming so I didnt bother picking their brains.

Two of the valves are obviously damaged and bent to hell. But the other valves appear to be fine by the naked eye. Some of them appear to have been seating uneven? I dont know. So Im curious how its determined if a valve is bad or not? What test(s) do they run to determine this?

Also, I noticed some odd wear on one of my Ti retainers that was removed. You can basically see an imprint of where the spring sat on the retainer surface. This only happened on one particular retainer and Im curious why this sort of wear happened and why it didnt do it on any other retainers? Is there possibly something I did wrong to cause this, such as a improper valve adjustment?

Ill try to get some pics if anyone is interested.

I know when we replaced all of the valvetrain in my head, to test the valves out we laid them on the edge of a flat table and rolled them back and forth with our hands to see how warped they were. I dont think that is how they do it though...

I would suggest since your unsure and the investment isn't going to break the bank, would be to simply replace all the parts with new ones. Why not? You already have the head off. That to me would be a really nice piece of mind, knowing that everything is new and proper.

Aloha,
Brandon

well thats one way to do it but Im guessing that might not catch the very slightly bent ones. And I actually did this with the valves that appear ok and they dont seem to be warped at all. And I bought all the parts through Len so I know they didnt just tell me to get new valves so they could make a few extra bucks.

Heres the valves that you can actually see are bent.

Heres the one retainer that shows really abnormal wear compared to the others. You can see clearly where the spring imbedded itself. The other retainer show no sign of this whatsoever.

alot of times you can fill the combustion chamber with oil and see if it leaks past any of the valves, and this is with the springs/retainers and such attached. I think you can also do it with water but i'd be too scared of rust

I don't know why it wore differently than the others... but TI = wear item and 'very' risky to use IMO.

if your looking to see if the valve is seating correctly in the head, shine a flashlight in the port of the head and see if you can see the light past the valve(looking at the valve side for the light).

the head is already fixed, 7 new valves and complete valve job. Im sure its seating correctly now. These are some of the valves that came out of it. they did a vacuum test on the head and I guess those 7 valves didnt appear to be seating correctly so thats why I had to get 7 new valves.

have the springs chamferred, and think about having ur titanium springs TiN coated. Imnot going to beging to thell u the horror sotries i had with JUN IIIs and their titanium retainers..supposedly JUN came out with their type 2 retainer, that isnt prone to this wear...BTW i was the first reported case of retainer failure to JUN on the type III setup, my retainer was toast after just 1 month of normal driving....dropped a valve and destroyed my whole motor
