Crunching into 3rd...
My gearbox has been crunching into 3rd gear when shifting from 2nd at redline. I think it is the synchros. I have about 10 months of powertrain warranty left. Is this covered under that warranty? Anybody get their synchro's replaced under warranty?
I hope my Acura dealership is nice about this. How long does it take to get this serviced done? I don't want to be out of a vehicle for 2 weeks.
Thanks.

Have you ever grinded a lot before this? I have missed the 3rd gear about 3 times and I'm worried that I will have the same problem as you

No...
This is my best description of it:
It feels like I'm half a tooth off, it's a crunch and in then engage.
One of the reasons why I don't like drag racing...I can't fix trannies to save my life. One day I will try, but I would need a beater so that my ITR can stay out of commission for a while.

No I do not grind. Especially not into 3rd. I bought my ITR used so it could be the residue of the last owner. The last owner also had a short shifter on it (I changed it back to stock when I purchased it).

it's not a short shifter that will damage your tranny's gears... it's the driver. probably the previous owner got on it a lot (hard to blame though since it is a type r). hopefully you can get it changed at the dealer if it's still under warranty.

Yup, it's your synchros.
I had my second gear synchro go bad on me (easiest one to f up because that 1-2 shift happens so fast) and had it replaced under warranty. Took about a week, but most of that was the approval process. The actual labor was done in one day. The tech who did the work is a friend of mine, and according to him the synchros are a weak point in the tranny. He also told me that the rest of my tranny was in really good condition, so maybe that helped my case.
While it is true that a short shifter itself does not cause synchros to fail, they do exaggerate the problem. I can shift faster than the synchros can handle with the stock shifter, so I think it's pointless to use a shifter with even shorter throws.

I experienced the same crunching before, and it got really bad, it used to crunch near redline, and it progressively crunched at lower rpms. All fixed under warranty. But now it's happening again.

Re: Crunching into 3rd... ( Rob)
i've got the same thing in both 3rd and 5th
When I say "miss a gear", for me it means I tried to shift fast into a gear but it did not go in initially causing me to free rev my motor.

Re: Crunching into 3rd... (Tommy_Gunns)
My tranny is starting to feel a little funky in 1st and 2nd. Yes, that's right... first and 2nd. It doesn't grind, but it's hard to engage 1st, even from a standstill. 2nd gear is the same. Sometimes it feels like it doesn't wanna go in, unless you slam it. I do not run a short shifter in my car, and the linkages does not hit the exhaust. Could this be syncros too, or something else?
Also, anyone have any hookups with any Acura dealerships (service) in NJ? I'll hit the guy off with a few bucks. I'm wanna try to get Acura to repair/replace my transmission, but I'm sure regular dealerships are gonna bitch about the mods on my car.

Re: Crunching into 3rd... (Incognito)
Our transmissions syncro setup sucks... bottom line.
This is by far the biggest problem with their tranny's. You would think they would have corrected the problem in the early 90's with their B-series trannys and their crunching problem.
Has anyone attempted/successfully changed their syncros? The inside guts of a tranny scare me, but I've heard it's not too bad. What are the prices for new syncros?

Re: Crunching into 3rd... (HybridKOOP)
I have the EXACT same problem. Waiting to get it fixed until it gets worse though. Crunching at redline in 2nd going to 3rd isn't something I do too often.
Acura should cover it as long as the rest of your synchros don't look bad (i.e. that would be a sign that it is the drivers fault they are going bad). But just one synchro going bad should be a warrenty issue.

mine did the same thing before and i changed the fluid with new honda fluid. Then the other thing i did was drive around in third just to let things(if they had gotten out of place) to settle back in and it hasnt done it sence. It worked for me..
