Default Car Won't Start... Just Clicks...

anyone have any ideas?
when i turn the key one click,
i hear the fuel pump & when i turn the key all the way,
the starter just clicks. it won't even turn over.
i thought maybe the battery was dead so,
i tested it & charged it eventhough it was fine.
i'm hoping it's just the starter.

is there anyway to test it?

thanks,
JAY.

I have the same problem. It only happens once a month or so. I was thinking of three things it could be
1: dead spot in the starter
2: clutch pedal switch
3: place where you stick the key ignition switch.
Anybody else have this problem. It's weird when it happens and it doesn't happen often.

Carefully slip the rubber boot away from the wire going to the starter without actually unplugging the connection. Put the positive end of a multimeter on that connection and the negative end on the negative battery cable. Have someone turn the ignition to "start."

If the needle jumps, you've got power to the starter; thus the starter is bad.

If the needle doesn't move there are a few other things it could be, but the click you're hearing is almost certainly the soleniod, which leads me to believe that your starter motor is bad.

if it'll pop start.... starter
if it won't... alternator
if it will but dies shortly after... battery + alternator

That terminal should ALWAYS have 12V.

If there is a clicking noise, the solenoid is working hence everything in the clutch
interlock circuit(ie clutch, key switch) is working and the only problem is the
starter itself.

thanks a lot guys. i was expecting to get flamed & told to do a search,
which i did but didn't find the answers i was looking for. i was up till 4 last night trying to fix it so, today i'm calling in sick & going to get the starter checked. i'll let you know what happens.
the clutch switch is fine cuz it won't click if the clutch isn't in & the positive terminal on the starter is always hot cuz it comes straight from the battery. all the fuses are good so, hopefully it's just a bum starter.

thanks again!
JAY.

That terminal should ALWAYS have 12V.
If you mean to say that there should be a constant 12v going to it regardless of whether the ignition is engaged or not, then no, it does not always have 12v.

If you mean that regardless of what may be wrong (i.e. clutch switch, ignition failure, etc.) then I may be wrong, although I cannot see how. Say for example that one of the battery cables was faulty (obviously not the case this time because of the click). There would be no power going to the starter.

At all times it should be getting 12V because it has a direct line to the battery.

Then there must be something wrong with mine because when I did this the needle jumped on the voltmeter.

I am not sure if this relate to the ITR starter because I never played with mine but on my old Accord, there was three "outside connection" on the starter. One was coming directly from the positive of the battery (this is the one that should always have 12 volt), one coming from the starter switch witch activates the solenoid (this is probably the one you tested as it get energized only when the starter switch is turned on) and the third one was getting power to the coil of the starter when the solenoid was closed (this one also get energized only when the switch is turned on).

Yes that third connection is probably internal to the starter now.
