If your are second guessing the integrity of this guy, I would pass up the motor. If he is willing to lie about other things, then 90k miles could (more than likely) is a fab.
I just want to remind you that the saying "too goo to be true" should be the way you look at purchasing used items (even new items).
There is a reason he is selling it for such a great deal. You are either looking at stolen or damaged goods.
Just my .02

If you're facing the engine bay from the front bumper there should be a stamp on the head right under the valve cover and above the exhaust maniold ports. It'll have 4 circles with lines in the middle and one will have a number. It'll be 94, 95, 96, 97, so on and so on. That'll tell you what year the motor is if the head is the stock one. Then on the bottom of the block right above the oil pan behind the exhaust manifold will be a vin plate.
Carfax may not be able to tell you how many miles it has on the motor but it can give you some clues to the vehicle it was in. For example, I just picked up a motor from a guy who said he got it from pick n pull. I was sketchy so I carfaxed the vin plate. It had every thing that was ever done and reported to it. That included the last smog check it had on it which was only 6 months before it was reported totaled. The smog check said it was at like 87,000 miles. The guy said the odometer said 90 something when he pulled it out of the car. By that I concluded that the guy was indeed being straight up and I bought the engine.

Re: vin number stamped on motor?
Carfax can miss ALOT of things. My car has been professionally repaired by a body shop on 2 occasions since I bought it in 2001, after some minor/slightly major collisions (whole driver side door caved in one time). Carfax doesn't list ANY of that stuff for my car. It actually only shows when I registered it in a particular county for the 1st time.

Re: vin number stamped on motor?
That means the wrecks were never reported to the DMV by the owner of the vehicle which is suppose to be done by law if the damage exceeds a certain amount or if there was any bodily injury, at least in California. And it also means the places that painted and did the repair work on the car didn't report it. I worked at a body shop for a few years and I'm pretty sure the vin number on the car is used and put through a system that should report it on the car history. I might be wrong on that but I remember something about the owner doing jobs for dealerships when lot workers bumped into cars parking them and what not so the price didn't go too high and it wouldn't get reported on the vehicle history.
My last LS shell I bought, I drove all the way down to L.A. with a trailer to pick up. I ran the vin number first and it came up clean. Just showed major work done at the dealer, smogs, and owner changes. I got there and it had some half *** MAACO work done on the front end and I was pissed but still bought it after some negotiating on price. It didn't show up either but it was obviously done at a shady place. Again I'm not 100% positive on this but if someone has more info on this then school me.
