Re: (WalkerGSR1)
I think when you change pistons you need to change the piston rings and when you change the piston rings you do have to hone the cylinders. Not positive though.

Anytime the rings are changed, you need to have it honed. 81mm bore pistons are fine unless you have scratches that require an overbore. In that case, you would need oversized pistons.

what would happen if you dont hone the block when installing new rings?

They won't seal correctly and all the labor you just spent on replacing the rings was a waste.

Re: New pistons (CW_98gsr)
If you buy new pistons, then buy new rings..they go hand in hand...and if you replace your pistons and rings, then you gotta hone the block. Honing does not make the bore any larger, so you will be good sticking with 81mm. But honeing does make sure the new rings will seat and seal correctly. If your mechanic did not hone the block take it super easy on the car for the nest 500miles. Dont rev past about 4000rpm, and basicly drive like a grandma.

If and only if the stock crosshatch is still visible and the cylinders are not egg shapped too much, you can just deglaze the walls with a ballhone and install new rings.
Good to go. Rings will seat just fine.

You should always replace rings when you are removing and isntalling pistons it allows for a better seal and same thign with the honing, it just cleans the walls so the rings can bond better therefore not leaking
