GSR Tranny removal... Do i have to take off the axle nuts and axles?
When removing a tranny, gsr in this case, is it mandatory to remove the axle nuts/knuckle/axles? Or is there another way?

from what i remember from when i did it, we just pulled the axle out on the drivers side (but left it in place) and on the pass. side we removed it. theres lotsa bolts down there, and it can be sorta tricky splitting the tranny from the block. goodluck

No need to remove them from the car. Remove them from the tranny and tie them out of the way.

yes, take them loose from the center of the hub, pop the rotor assembly up out of the joint at the bottom, then there are 3 bolts on a mount that holds the driver's axle in, remove those, then the driver's axle will come out (prybar is your friend), then after the rotor assembly on the pass side is out, then pry that axle out, nothing else holding it.
but no, they don't need to come out completely, just out of the tranny and hanging is fine

take two plastic baggies and cover the ends of the half shafts and rubber band them. that way no dirt or crap gets on the ends and they will be clean when you stick them back into the tranny

yep, both of em... when i put my clutch in we took off motor mounts, then put a jack under the car and lowered the motor to get the tranny off, was this necessary? lol, its pretty tight down there.

i just did mine last weekend... Its easiest to completely remove the passenger side axle, but you dont really have to remove the driver side since the itermediate shaft is what goes into the tranny..
It pretty easy, i did it by my self in a few hours, so if you have help it should go fast

Re: (92WhiteEG)
I worked on a rusted '96 Civic with airbags this weekend. PB blaster, heat, 24" breaker bar, and a 18" exhaust tube on top of it made easy work of it. That's after the 1/2" impact at 120psi refused to budge it any.
1/2" drive ratchet in b/w the knuckle and LCA with a jack pops the balljoint in a couple of minutes.
The rest is cake.
If you're really set on removing the driver-side axle from the int shaft, use a small sledge hammer to hammer it away from the int shaft. The manual says to use a soft or deadblow hammer, but that won't even budge it. Small sledge will pop it out in 5 seconds.

yes you half to remove both of the axles , the axle nuts are a 32mm , the lower ball joint is a 17mm , to seperate use a ball joint seperator if that does not work leave the seperator on and hit the lca with a hammer the vibration will seperate the ball joint, oah by the way make sure you drain the tranny fluid before you do anything

Re: GSR Tranny removal... Do i have to take off the axle nuts and axles? (MintyDip)
ive pulled trannies many times the fastest way for me is to seperate the lower ball joints and tie rod ends by using a sledge hammer. loosen nuts, slightly thread back on to keep from hitting threads, slam right near where the bolt/tapered bolt goes through the hole on the LCA and the spindle where tie rod connects dont beat on the ends of the bolts. with the lower strut to LCA brackets removed pry the pass side axle from trans and driver side axle from intermediate shaft and on both sides lift rotor spindle assembly out of LCA and pull out towards you and swing axles away towards front of car. never try to pull axle out of trans or int. shaft by pulling on the axle shaft you will seperate the inner joints only after popping them out of their place with screwdriver or prybar.
