Cut out while driving, won't start.

Cut out while driving, won't start.
Hi again...
So yesterday my CEL came on, and today while driving to work on the freeway, my car stalled itself out of nowhere. Still had power (electrical) but no power steering or brakes like when the car is off.
Came to a stop, tried to start the car, it turned over but never started. After a few tries, it stopped turning over and just did nothing upon turning the key.
Car still does not start. Tried it again earlier tonight (about seven hours after incident) and it was turning over again, but not starting.
Any ideas? Thanks.

Have you even checked to see it your getting fuel or have spark?
First thing, turn ign. switch to run, [not all the way to start] does the CEL turn on, do you hear the fuel pump priming?
If so, try starting the car a few times, [crank a few times] then immediately remove a spark plug and inspect the end, is it "wet' wit gas, does it smell of gas, will it light up if you put a match/lighter to it?
Do you have a 12V test light?
If not spend the $2.99 or less and get one, [not the LED type] it is the best cheap diagnostic tool you can have. 94

Re: Cut out while driving, won't start.
check all the fuses first.
Agree, find out what is the CEL and fuel. That will point you to the right direction but may not be the actual problem.
Sounds more like an ignition issue. Maybe crank sensor or something like that.

Re: Cut out while driving, won't start.
Your motor needs 3 things to run. Fuel, spark, compression. Find out which of those 3 things you lost. If your motor just cut off, I'd be most worried about your compression. How old is your timing belt? Its possible that your fuel pump cut out. There are many ways to check for fuel depending on your tools and mechanical ability. You should be able to look up ways to check fuel pressure online and see which one you could do.
Then you could pull your Distributor cap off and crank the motor to see it the rotor turns. You'll at least know the timing belt is still there, but it won't tell you if its good or if your timing is off.
You can also make your own spark tester using a spark plug. Just ground the threads of the spark plug while its out of the motor and watch for a spark as you crank the motor.
If any of this sounds confusing, this problem may be passed your abilities and you may want to think about having someone more advanced take a look at it.
