Default CA BAR swaping from ob1 to obd2 motor questions!!!

ok right now i got a 1993 honda civic hatchback with a b16a3 ob1 (del sol doch vtec motor) and want to swap to a ob2 1997 b18c1 motor. will i have to swap everything to obd2 to get this to pass CA BAR or can i just keep it obd1?. if i have to change everything to obd2 what will i need to change up in order the pass this inspection?

***sorry if this is a dumb question. if the b18c1 was to be an obd1 motor then i wouldnt have posted this. HATE CA smog and LAWS!!!

To be legal, you need to convert over to OBD2 to install an OBD2 engine, as far as I understand the law.

ECU and all emissions systems.

OBD2 needs a 2nd O2 sensor after the cat, and probably quite a bit more that I'm unaware of.

I have had a few 92-95 civic2 with OBD2 engine swaps in them and they pass emmissions running on OBD1. I know if you are gonna use the obd2 alternator and feul injectors you must change your wire harness injector plugs and alternator plugs to obd2. You do not even need to hook up the crank angle sensor.

There's a difference between "what's needed to run it" and "what's needed to legally pass the swap through smog" in California...

If its an OBD2 engine, they'll need to be able to connect the OBD2 port scanner during the test.

well when they enter the vin into the smog machine it will not ask for the obd2 scanner to be plugged in. Like I said I live in california and I have done this before.

wouldnt they run the vin# on the motor and know it's an obd2 motor instead of an obd1 motor? the thing is if i got the change to obd2 then what are all the things that i would need to do in order to make this pass visual (sensors and wires) and smog? i know theres gotta be people in here whose done this before going from obd1 to obd2. is it also true that the gas tank will have to be changed also or something with the fuel or gas tank haha.

Obd1 cars are super easy to ref. Obd2 is tricky. All you need in this situation is obd1: dizzy, alternator, injectors and a p72 ecu. Make sure you have a b series cat and run the **** out of your car to make the cat. super hot before you go in for your appointment. Also make sure you do oil change a couple days before, mach flush or clean out your fuel system and make sure timing is correct. They won't run any vins if I recalled. PM me for more info.

Let me borrow the gsr to bar my civic before you convert it and then I'll give it back to you. There will be incentives. I just want to borrow it for one week.

If you want to just smog it you can run it obd1. If you are trying to actually BAR the gsr motor in the hatch you have to basically have everything from the 97 gsr swapped into the hatch. The motor, obd2 fuel injectors, obd2 cat, obd2 vac routing and evap, pcv, throttle body, ecu, distributor, alternator, harness. The ecu has to be from a 96-99 gsr as well. 00-01 has a different harness and the ecu has an immobilizer. Don't try and cap or ghetto rig anything because they check everything. It's like taking a bare 93 hatch and a wrecked 97 gsr and and dropping everything into the hatch with no shortcuts.

Can you verify or confirmed this? B18c1 doesn't come obd1 like in 94-95?

good info sir. OP this is pretty much all you need. and btw they don't smog the cars at ref station anymore they just check if you have all emission equipment in place and they give you a sticker, your on your own to get it smogged, thats at least what they did to my buddy here in san diego not sure about anywhere else in cali

see theres people saying you can just convert everything on the motor to obd1 and BAR it and theres people saying you have to convert everything to obd2 to BAR it.
