Hi all,

I have a 94 Acura Integra LS, automatic.

I'm having 2 problems with the car, they keep coming and going at separate times, so I'm trying to see if they are related and if anyone here has experienced them before.

The first problem:

The car will not start when I turn the key. The radio, lights, power windows, etc.. all work fine, but when I turn the key to start the engine, nothing, it just clicks. If I try to start it a few times, it will eventually crank and start with no problem. Sometimes I have to try 2 or 3 times, sometimes it takes 10-15 attempts. This will happen for a period of time, and then the problem disappears, the car starts fine every single time. It's a continuous cycle.

The second problem:

The car will not allow me to shift out of park, I have to use the key to unlock the shifter and start the car in neutral. It will go back in and out of park with the shifter button held down, but the second I let go of the button, it will stay locked in "P". Again, it will do this for a few days, or a week, and then it goes back to working just fine.

Any feedback from personal experience or just ideas are much appreciated.

For the first one, check the connections on the starter, especially the small wire on the starter solenoid and also clean the battery terminals real good. Mine does this too but i have a 5 speed and its probably the switch under the clutch pedal which requires the pedel to be pressed down to start it just hasn't been a big enough deal to make me change it. It only happens to me like 1 every month or two. With an automatic, does the brake need to be pushed in to start it? If so, that could also be the issue. Im not sure about your secone question though, good luck.

I've checked and cleaned the connections at the battery, but I haven't done the starter connections yet, I'll do that tonight.

As for the switch at the clutch pedal, there is a Neutral Safety Switch for the automatic transmission, but I believe it is built in to the gear selector. They sell replacements for about $60, it may be worthwhile to replace it if I don't get a definitive answer here.

So I cleaned and checked all of the connections, everything is solid, but I am still having the issue.

The Neutral Safety Switch comes in tomorrow, once I replace that I can see if that somehow helps.

Are there any ignition relays that I should check? Maybe it/they are sticking and need to be replaced? If anyone has input, it would be much appreciated!

Update:

I replaced the neutral safety switch ($55 part) and everything is working perfectly. Not locked in Park anymore and starts up on the first time every time....so far. It's supposed to be coldish tonight, so the morning will be the real test. If it reverts back to the old problem of not starting or getting "locked" in park, i'll post another update.
