How do you get off undercoat??????????????
Its hell, let me just put it that way! lol I researched this one for a while before I started. I tried about 3 or 4 methods until I realized the one that causes the least scratches and damage to the factory finish underneath the undercoating was using wire brush wheels. Its dirty as hell, nasty and very time consuming. It took me about 2 weeks of doing it in the evenings and weekends. Its something that you really have to make sure you want to do because you are going to get bored with it real quick! LOL
Anyway, get you a couple 6" and several of the I think they are around 3" wire brushes that will attach to a drill. I don't recommend the Black & Decker brand because they didn't last worth a damn! Go to some place like Home Depot or Lowe's and pick you up some of their wire wheels. Cover the floor area to help with clean up. MAKE SURE you WEAR A MASK! One with filters (like you get a home depot for around $25). Long pants, a hooded with the hood pulled up etc...you're probably getting the idea...did I say its dirty as hell? LOL
A lot of your actual restoration shops weld up a rotiserie to the frame and turn the car like on the grill...lol But if you aren't able to do that like I wasn't, I bought some heavy duty 6 ton (6 ton because of the height available with them) jackstands and put the car up about 22" in the air. If I could have gotten it higher safer I would have. Here's a couple pic's (no she's not a daily driver).

ive actually been doing this same thing for awile now. i stripped the fenderwells and repainted and started on the underbody. i have found the wire brush to be good also. but it takes awile so i hit it with the wire brush and then i get a big flat head screwdriver and scrape it off and comes off in big chunks like 2ft long chunks. took me 2 weeks to scrape out all of the sound deadning with a screwdriver and hammer

I know EXACTLY what thats like!
I had some rust in my wheel wells, after i cut it out i had to clean the edges so i could weld to it cleanly. And i had to go right down to the steel and belive me, its extremely dirty!
I couldnt imagine doing a whole undercarage.

The thing I liked about the wire wheel brushes was like I said it didn't scratch up the finish. You could use just enough pressure to remove the undercoating to leave an almost perfectly preserved factory finish. I tried all kinds of ****, puddy knives, razor knifes etc., with heat, but in spots when you used to much pressure it left deep scratches and because I was painting my undercarriage I didn't want that.
Ok, im new to this forum. I was looking around and found this thread.
I have a "Noob" question. Why do u remove all the undercoat? Im thinking, for lighter weight. But then looking at the picz i see it's for looks also.
How much weight do u think u take off? And what are the pro's and con's of doing that? Any info would be good.

When I was almost completed it dawned on me that I should have saved it all to weigh it. It was heavy stuff! I bet just the amount I got off the last 1/3rd of the cargo compartment area weighed at least 3 to 5 lbs.
No, I didn't respray undercoating. Although if it is going to be a daily driver or you plan to drive it much you are going to have to spray some type of clear rock guard or something similar. I only sprayed the rock guard in the wheel wells and the lower bottom of the firewall. The car won't be street driven often, if at all.
