Default BAD DAY...Timing cover removal?????

Well today while inspecting my car, I noticed that the alternator belt was cracking and old. A friend of mines put it on for me and when driving back home from hi shop, I noticed a whining noise while accelerating. I called him and he said that maybe the belt was too tight and to loosen it a little bit. I did that and noticed that as the belt was turning, it was touching part of the timing cover.

My timing cover being dirty, you can see a little line that the belt was making against it (clean). I took my hand and felt around in that area and the little circle pushed in a little bit. Me not really paying any attention went on about my day cleaning the car up and then I went to crank it. It was turning over and then it make a "clump noise" and the engine was just whining. It acts like it wants to crank sometimes and sometimes it just whines. It think that that little circle pc fell into the cover causing it to not crank).

I have changed the plugs, cap, and rotor button today. Wires are still good, fuel pump coming on, I got spark, changed the main relay with the 2 extras that I have and the same thing

Is it possible to remove the top timing cover without removing the bottom? Do you all think that maybe I threw my timing off?? HHHEEELLLPPP!!!!!!!!! Anyone in GA have a on the scene compressor to get this crankpulley bolt off???? Thats mainly what I am worried about. I have no money to tow it to a shop.

Just for the hell of it, heres a pic of the pc that fell in. #2 in the pic

yea you can remove the top cover without removing the bottom cover. just remove all the 10mm bolts holding the top cover on, looks like #21 and #22 in the picture. then take off your valve cover. then lift out the top timing belt cover. you can take the valve cover off first if you want, doesn't really matter.

I said #2 is the circle that I am talking about.

While inpecting the alternator belt, I think I punched #2 out and it fell into the cover and possibly the reason my cars not starting. I am trying to get it out.

yeah he helped me, but he is about 20-25 minutes from me. My car isn't starting, so I can't take it to his shop.

I know u can take the top cover off easily; see if the bottom cover will pop off and mabe you can inspect more. Is the timing belt itself really tight on the cam gear? Can you pull it off with your hands? You dont need a compressor to take off the crank pulley but try the easy things first. I would do that as a last resort

If #2 did fall in its not starting because its prolly jamed up. Try your best to get that lil thing outta there. Then, once its out, make sure your timing is still aligned. Lastly, crank it over.

Sounds like the piece that fell in stripped your timing belt.

So:

Remove your distributor cap.

Have someone crank the starter while you watch the distributor rotor.

If the rotor don't turn while the engine is cranking, timing belt time.

Search for "Crank Pulley" to see all different kinds of ways of getting it off.

I personally use a home-made crank holder and propane.

most likely that #2 didnt fall in. they are usually missing on most 4th gens. plus its made to fit snug and not go through, if you've ever seen one, you know what i mean.

if the car whines when u try to crank it most likley your belt it broken, or it has jumped a significant amount of teeth.

Till you can get it Figured out. Do not crank the Car any more. As it is You probley bent Valves. You need to Set the Crank at TDC And Remove the top Timming belt cover. Check youre timming this way first. If Its off buy More than 2 Teeth theres a chance Damage was done. Once you do this let us know What the story is.

I am pretty sure that #2 fell in because I remember touching it and at the time it only pushed in a tad bit. Thats why I wasn't really worried about it. I peeked into the cover and the belt doesn't seem to be broken. Also the car was whining after putting the ALTERNATOR belt on. Thats how all of this mess started.

My boyfriend and I did that already when changing the cap and rotor button. It is turning over fine. I won't be cranking it anymore though, until I get this timing issue looked at. Thanks for the help folks

is there any chance that maybe the whining was caused by the belt being overly tightened? when i changed mine it whined for a few minutes then it went away. But you might want to do a compression test. I went through all this a few months back only to find afew of my valves were bent and piston #3 was melted

better luck to you

I agree here, when doing my timing belt you can see the "tab" wont fit into the hole completely unless you crammed it in there, its just too big.

I'd remove your upper timing belt cover, check your timing marks, line up the white mark on the crank with the little alignment tabs on the cover, then check your cam gear alignement marks with the head. If everything checks out then manually rotate the crank with the cover off and inspect your timing belt for missing teeth. You can try to unbolt the lower cover and try and pry it back to see if anything fell in there, it wont come off b/c of the crank pully but you might be able to pull it back some.

I probably won't fool with it for a second. My friend is coming over to look at it in a few days. He has a d16z6 that I noticed sitting in his garage. I will possibly be dropping that into the Civic. He wants $200 for it. I think it needs rings, but I will be doing a overhaul on the engine anyways.

This stock engine has close to 250,000 miles on it. I am back to working on my Prelude as of yesterday. We finally got the code 7 to go away. Hooray!!!! No more codes on the Lude. I guess I can be happy about something. Now time to pass emissions the right way, without having to pay out the *** for someone to do it on the side
