what are the dangers of taking off the timing belt covers? if any? i see it done all the time, but to me it seems unsafe to have that out in the open where rocks, etc can get in there. Am i wrong to think that?

If you drive on dusty roads, its probably not a good idea. But even then, the only thing that could possibly be affected would be the tensioner.

most people run w/o the top cover. removing the whole thing is a bad idea.

for some reason my lower cover rubbed the crank pulley ever since I got the engine (swap). I've been driving without either cover for 2 yrs now with no problems. I'm sure its possible that something can get lodged under the t-belt, but its very unlikely.

taking it off is a bitch with the motor in
top cover only
