On a y8 head gasket, if you just use the middle of gasket will you get a little more compression?
I was told by someone awhile back that if you remove both outer parts of the y8 head gasket and just use the metal middle peice, you will gain compression, and a few HP's is this true? If so do you recomend it, or just use the gasket the way it is? thanks for info.
Don't do it, you'll ruin the headgasket.
The Y8 is the thinnest OEM D16 gasket out there... From what you're saying, you may have the 3-layer D16Z6 gasket, the Y8 is a 2-layer.

the y8 head gasket is a 3 layer (0.037" final thickness) or a 2 layer (0.025" final thickness). the z6 head gasket is the same thickness as the y8 and twice the price...i dont know what the big difference is between the two.
but as MrTodd said...i wouldnt recommend taking the gasket apart. ive heard of people taking one layer off but not two. if you do that you might as well run without a headgasket! an extra .5-1 hp isnt worth taking the head back off after 50 miles.
