B18C1 CRX Si, need help with a few things
hey im new to this site, so please forgive me if im in the wrong forum for this type of question. im a long time member of Hondaswap and decided to come here for the amount of people that visit this site, since someone will mostlikely know the answer here.
so a little background. about a year ago i bought a CRX with a b18c1 already installed. the car ran fine except there were some problems with the brakes and there was a high idle problem. since ive had the car, ive fixed most all of the problems ive encountered and some new ones as well. the engine is a 94, and was running on a obd1 p72 ecu it appears that the crx harness has been used and modified to use an obd1 connector on the ecu end and on the engine end, some parts of the harness was modified to work with the engines obd1 components and some parts of the engine, like the distributor, to work with the harness. now about a month ago i had the car stolen while i was out for just a few hours. they stole the usual, rims/tires, system, etc. i was lucky enough to have the car returned with the engine and suspension components intact. but the did steal my distributor for some odd reason.
the distributor that was on the engine was an obd1 distributor, but it had the obd0 plugs on it, to hook up to the crx harness i assume. now ive bought a distributor, but i bought an obd0 b16 distributor so i could plug it right in. now i know it will physically bolt to the head, but is there any differences in the way it works? will the fact that its obd0 mess anything up? for the most part, as far as i know, the car is running on obd1 components, injectors, etc. and im jus wondering if i will have any trouble getting it started.
also another thing that i've wondering is if it would be possible to use an obd1 gsr harness for this type of thing. and use ALL obd1 components. to me this seems possible as all the harness does is connect the sensors to the ecu. could i do this using both halves of the harness? has it been done?
and one last thing that is irrelevant but i would like answered as well. i was running a cable LS transmission. this obviously does not have a vss sensor, not an electrical one at least. it carries the "signal" from the tranny to the speedo through a cable that spins. now doesnt the ecu require a signal from vss for the engine to run properly? the engine ran perfectly, vtec right at 4400 rpms, and secondaries at ~5800 rpms. why wasnt i throwing a code?
i do apologize for the lengthy post, and if someone or multiple people could answer these questions i would greatly appreciate it. thank you and have a nice day

again i apologize if this could be better suited for a different forum. if it is, could the mods please move it? thanks.
The non-OBD distributor will not work with the OBD 1 ecu. You will need a OBD 1 or OBD 2 DOHC VTEC distributor to get it running again.
You could do that, use the whole OBD 1 engine harness and dash harness but it's a lot of work and not for the novice. The best thing to do is get OBD 1 harness side distributor plugs and put them on the non-OBD harness so the distributors can be swapped.
In the 88-91 civic the pulse need for the ecu to detect speed is convered in the gauge cluster and then passed to the ecu.

hey i created a new name cause of the 5 posts thing and i still needed to ask more questions...
when does vtecvillian frequent the boards?
why wont the obd0 distributor work with a obd1 ecu even if i wire it up to plug right in?
and my thoughts lately about my car, have been to use the gsr harness, get a hydro tranny, mostlikely a gsr one, get the hasport hydro kit for it, and get a gsr cluster to go along with everything. now doing this would everything hook up? and how will doing this affect the in-cabin components like switches and all the stuff with the dash and the things they control. now im not looking to replace the whole harness all in the back of the car and everything just from the ecu into the engine bay.
Davep - if you or anyone else could IM me so we could talk about this in real time, i would definitely appreciate it, i dont wanna feel like im breaking the rules with creating a new name and all if im not supposed to.
thanks for all the help thus far

You cant use the OBD0 dizzy with an OBD1 or OBD2 ecu because of the the way one of it's sensors works, the OBD0 dizzy pulses 16 times a second and the OBD1/2 pulses at 24 times a second. So it CAN'T be rewired. The ECU won't recognize it's signal. It's part of it's internal sensor construction.
You have alot more reading to do, before you attempt what you posted above, you can't just plug the gsr harnesses in. It's not that simple. Some things will work, most will not. You will need to add wires and sensors to the CRX harness. It's too tough to do it, the other way around. HTH

thanks for the response, i wasnt sure why it wouldnt work.
i guess ill link this in the hybrid section as well. thanks for everyones help thus far.

Even the wiring from the obd 0 - obd 1 plugs is confusing as they all do not match up, and I think the obd 1 requires more wires. I don't know much more about that.
As far as the vss is concearned, it will throw a code on the computer if your speedo is not working. I can't remember if it shows on the dash or not, but I know it will definatly code on the computers LED. However, this code will not affect your running in a terribly negative way. You can run sans speedo.

ive always wondered about this as well... does anyone know how difficult it would be to use the obd1 engine bay harness and rewire the ends up to the obd0 plugs so it could plug in by the firewall??

I started to do the same thing, even though everyone told me how hard it was. I said- "I can do this, it can't be that hard". Well you know, IT CAN be done, but I don't know if it's worth all the time. I started to do it and gave up. I just bought a hasport harness instead. The problem for me was that most wires don't match up. They're way more wires in the teg harness, than in the CRX one, and some go in opposite directions as the CRX harness does.
To do it you'll need alot of patience and do alot of reading of schematics. And alot of repinnig plugs and moving wires around. It's doable but, pretty tough.

i didnt mean just using the engine harness, i meant using the engine harness AND the harness that goes through the firewall and into the ECU and i think it goes to the cluter too. could it work doing that? i know it would make the engine run and everything, but i dunno about all the dash stuff. how would all that be affected?
You CAN do it. But think about a couple things. First the GSR has power everything, the CRX does not. You will have ALL those extra wires and plugs that will get in the way and confuse things. ABS, Criuse control. etc.
The dash plugs and wires will NOT match up. A/C plugs are diffrent. Low fuel light. etc. Lots of repinning and / or soldering to do. But hey if you have the time and motivation, anythings possible. The Wright brothers did manage to FLY, afterall. LOL

well in my earlier post i did mention that i was thinking about using the gsr cluter as well. so with the cluster engine, tranny, and full harness i know i could get at least all that to plug right in and work. but you are right about the other ****. i thought all the other stuff was on a seperate harness not connected to the ecu, but i see i was mistaken. i thought this would be a good way of doing things with not too much work, but i see otherwise now. so you guys think it will just be easier to use my existing harness and wire everything in as i go along?
hi ihaven post here yes but what ihave done on my crx is use both the engine wire and computer side of the odb1 wire harness and cut off the side that go toward the dash and spice that into the odb 0 now that the temp charge light check engine work but the speedo don't work because it cable but the jdm should work becuse it electric hope this help
could you explain exactly what you did? try to type better, it was kinda hard to follow your post... im not trying to flame you, it really was hard to follow.
could you tell me what wires to splice in and where?
pics would help too. thanks for your help
