Default Torn subframe with 19mm ST rear sway bar?

Yes, I've searched already.

I found a lot of posts about 22mm rear bars tearing subframes. I have a 19mm Suspension Techniques rear sway bar with no reinforcement and am wondering if this is still too big of a bar with no strengthening? I've had the bar for a year or so now with no problems, but I am going to be autocrossing for the first time this weekend. I will probably be getting the Beaks kit anyways, but of course not in time for this Sunday... I was just hoping I could sleep better in the next few days before autocrossing, knowing I probably won't be ripping **** up.

Thanks for any help.

I don't think you should use one at all without reinforcement, but I'm not sure. I guess you're lucky it's been okay this long.

get the beaks kit. a rear tie bar will help too.

even w/ the beaks kit you can still rip it if you BEAT THE **** OUT OF your car enough for an extended duration.

the civic subframe is weak. period.

Really? ****. I take corners all the time with my 22mm rear bar and Beaks kit. Does this mean I need to settle down a little and drive more conservatively?

user Halo on this site ripped his entire subframe off of his car with the ST rear sway. Even though it is 19mm only, the connection point on the LCA gives it more leverage.

jackson ripped his off with the itr bar and beaks kit.
but he tracks it all the time and - again, BEATS THE **** OUT OF his car.

most people should be fine with the beaks kit.
i went with the comptech rear sway / tie bar combo. a little pricey but my subframe will stay on the car.

the extra grip slicks provide put added stress on your suspension.

I figured that much. But still, if the subframe is weak there, why not reinforce it anyway?

slicks = more grip = more speed = more work for swaybar = more stress on subframe.

duh.

and the beaks kit is only 60 dollars. just get it.

I understood the slicks thing. I just think for the price, he may as well get the Beak's kit. Insurance, you know?

So the combination kit works to prevent subframe damage?

Why not go with this? https://honda-tech.com/zerothread?id=636980 Plus they're offering it for $45 shipped now. It does the same thing as the Beaks kit plus you get a tie bar too for less than the Beaks kit. I put mine in this weekend and it seems to be a pretty stout piece and looks like it will do a better job than the BSQ or Beaks kit.

That doesn't look too sturdy to me. Also, doesn't look like it will do the same job as the beaks kit.

I'll try to get pics up soon, I think it will do a better job than the beaks-beaks kit has a small footprint as opposed to this piece+the benefits of putting some of the stress on the tie-bar.

I didn't think it would do the same thing either but once I got under the car and compared the two the srr wins my vote.

i went with the comptech too. works great. feels great. but is it really better in terms of stability and not tearing out your subframe-ness? haha

I just got back from autocrossing. Wow, that's fun! I didn't have any problems with the 19mm ST bar... and I was really yanking it around the track hard. I took my front bar off, so I was running Ground Control, stock shocks, and the 19mm rear bar. The car didn't understeer or oversteer that much, it felt pretty balanced. Since I will be doing this again in a month, I am going to be getting the Beaks kit.

This was a 1.5 mile track on an old abandonded airfield in College Station, TX... Aggie land. It was mostly 2nd gear of course with room for 3rd gear in one area.
Run1: 107 seconds
Run2: 95
Run3: 93
Run4: 90.813!

That last run was the second fastest SSM class time of 20 or so cars. The fastest overal track time was a 78 by a Miata. There were a bunch of low 80 second Camaros and a few RX-7s. I've never had more fun in any car! Now, I wish I didn't spend 2 years trying to go fast in a straight line.

Thanks for the help guys.

No, I have a black 93 Civic Si.

I guess since this thread was renewed, I'll mention that I did get the Beaks ITR kit a while back. I was very happy with the service I got from Wil at Beaks. The bar works and feels great. I did run with no front bar at all, so the rear was definitely sliding out on the quick transitions.. but I liked it. I would describe the handling as neutral, but slightly on the oversteer side for certain turns.
