How do you guys suggest I get my car past smog?
I have a 00 Type-R with the following mods:
AEM CAI
JDM 4-1 header
Carsound cat (modified to 2.5" to fit header)
Kakimoto R Exhaust
VAFC running rich
I need to get this car smogged within 3-4 days, what can I quickly do to make it pass? Retuning the VAFC is not a option because I was quoted $315 just to tune it back to stock. What else do I need to worry about besides the AFC?

how old is your carsound cat? you may need a new one, they don't last very long under rich conditions.
write down your setting, then return them all to zero. but most likely pass without doing a thing, that is if your cat is not fouled. if you do fail, it's most likely caused by high HCO levels due to short life span of carsound cats.
then get a new cat, change your oil and spark plugs, and try again.

My carsound cat is probably a year old or so, I'm not exactly sure.
Write down what settings? I have no idea how to tune and change the settings on the vafc, I had a shop tune them for me before.
I havent got it smoged yet, but I wanna make sure it will past first cause I dont wanna waste $60.

$60 for a smog check? that's rather high. it's normally $20-$30.
VAFC has a very simple and has an easy interface. don't be scared of the thing, just push some buttons, it is very intuitive!
your car is stock; you should not worry too much, except for your cat. it might have gone bad already. you won't know for sure until you try to smog it, or spend $120 for a new cat.

(1) Document VAFC settings
(2) Replace cat, spark plugs
(3) Lean the F out on VAFC
(4) Drive immediately to smog check (you can have it done complete for $25 if you look around)
(5) Pay $25 - get cert transmitted to DMV
(6) Restore VAFC settings from (1)
(7) Kill cat as a consequence of fuel settings
(8) Repeat every 24 months
And don't worry about smogging it BEFORE you pay registration. Pay the registration on time (or they fine you), but there is an unofficial 3-month "grace period" for smog/registration citations. Cops won't hassle your tags, alone... but they sure as heck will "pile on" if you did something else stupid.

if elk grove is in northern cali, then smog prices ARE going up there. since july, they passed a mandatory smog requirement: dynometer(sp?) it's not the 2 speed idle test anymore.
sucks now, since they also implemented the random 15% test only station rule.

Over in San Bernardino its been like that for a few years now.
If you can find someone that knows,or if you know of a smog tech. That can do a ghost smog.Basically use a non modded car,to run on the dyno, put your cars info in the computer. The car has to basically be the same since the dyno does weigh the car too.

I have a silly question-not familiar with the ins and outs of the VAFC-why not use the stock ECU? I am running Hondata in the ITR, and all you have to do is unplug the Hondata ECU and plug in the stock ECU. And as mentioned, you may need a Cat, older Carsounds can fail to reduce emissions to the passing point.

You mean just unplug the VAFC?
I tried and it messes up the car, it idles bad and wont vtec. I think to remove it you would need to rewire the ECU.

Don't forget that you live in Cali and you will have to pass a visual. With Reguard to your VAFC, just record all the settings, then reinitalize it. Then go into it and make sure the Car type is 4/ and your sensors are set at 6 in and 6 out. This will put the car back to stock, as far as ECU goes. You will need to hide the VAFC, you don't need to unplug it. I just did mine 2 months ago and I just simply hid the thing. You may not pass with your 4-1 headers. Even if you pass the smog test, you will fail if the testor notices that it is aftermarket. He/She will be looking for a CARB # like the one on your AEM CAI.

Many of my friends have done the following to pass emissions:
- make sure you have about 10 liters of gas left
- pour on about 1,5 liters of methylated spirit ("redspirit", or whatever you call it in the US)
- go get your car tested for emissions
You'll pass with no problem. Just be carefull not to rev your car until you can fill her up with more gas cause you'll be running very lean.

damn you guys have to pay money to go through smog? its free in TN and people even just take their cars up there to see how bad they can fail it. haha now i can understand why you want to pass the first time. anyways do they INTENSLY check underneath the hood? my friend passed his LS with a FULL straight pipe with a muffler only. not cat or anything. he just unplugged one of the injectors around the corner from the test station. lol it ran like major **** for a few minutes but he passed with absolutely NO emission controls on it. haha just an idea if you dont think they will notice an unplugged injector

Just don't go at all -- I was due back in January for my emissions test.
I really should take care of that soon

You can get a Carsound cat at any decent muffler shops. Even the some of the dirty little shops carry them. Shouldn't cost more than $120 installed.
I still think you should be able to pass without changing a thing on your VAFC, that is as long as your cat isn't fouled and they don't notice the non-carb header.
Stock cars with VAFC should still pass the sniffer test with flying colors.

Yes I know I keep trying to change the settings. I change it, then turn my car off, then turn it back on and its back at 1 in 1 out.

Re: How do you guys suggest I get my car past smog? (FusionITR)
i had a EG hatchback with a GSR motor in it and i passed smog fine.
what i did was:
-change the oil
-add fuel additive (go to autozone they have tons of fuel additives made specifically for passing smog)
-put on stock muffler
try setting your vafc to stock settings and then try the stuff that i mentioned above before buying a whole new cat. hopefully you'll pass smog then. good luck.
