What tire is comparible to the stock RE010, but with longer life?
I loved my RE010's, but they only lasted 20,000. I just got Khumo's from Tire Rack(Supra Ecsta 712 - 205/50/15) and they seem REALLY soft on the side wall (almost to the point of being dangerous compared to the stock wheels). What tire is going to give me the same stiffness/grip, with longer life? If nothing else, I'll go back to the Potenza's.
My next question is if Tire Rack will allow returns on tires?

The Bridgestone S-03 PP...... Last a bit longer than the Bridgestone RE010 according to Bridgestone's treadwear index.

I feel you about the Kumho 712's man.
I love the wet and dry traction that they provide, but the sidewall is very soft. Under hard cornering, it seems the tire is going to just peel off the rim.
The thing is, is that I have to corner alot slower than I use to when I had the RE010's. For the price it is a good tire, but does not come close to sidewall stiffness. When these tires a through, I will be looking for some new replacements myself. Hey, let me know about the returns policy at Tire Rack!

...it sucks that they killed such a great performing tire(712) with rubberband sidewalls... if they stiffened up the sidewalls, I wouldn't need any other street tire for any of my cars... Sorry this doesn't answer your question though...
S-03 PP, as stated earlier. yeah, it's expensive, but when you want performance and long life, expect to pay $$$.
I have the Kumho's and I run a high pressure for the street (38F/36R and sometimes 40F/38R). Try higher pressures. At normal pressures (35F/33R) I didn't like the tires.

If you're getting 20,000 from the RE010, keep using them - you're getting WAY longer treadlife than most folks. And any tire that lasts longer won't perform as well.
BTW, you can't compare treadwear ratings between two different brands. They're only comparable for different tires within the same brand. That's because each one is a rating compared to a reference tire kept by that manufacturer. For example, Michelin's reference tire isn't the same as Bridgestone's reference tire.

Yeah Dave,
I saw the comparison of the Khumo's in the last issue of Grassroots MotorSports "BTW thanks for suggesting that mag," Anyways thay stated similar results with the stock pressures but when they upped the pressures "pardon me for not having the pressure handy, I'll post it soon."
After raising the pressures they stated that the Khumo's were the performance leader and since it was a blind test the drivers truely liked the grip and performance at the limit. They said that they gave a good audible warning, and were a good all-around tire especially for the price.
I know that Daves tires are louder, I've heard 'em. But you gotta admit that for the money they are a good replacement right Dave? I mean there are always other tires to choose from but your price goes up steadily through the $100's.
Dave why don't you give us a little review of your own so everyone can benefit from your experience. I see you don't like 'em and can kinda figure out why. The tire pressures are important but not everyone knows that you race ALL the TIME! "I'm sure you can't tell that I'm jealous..."
Good luck guys,
A.

Damn!! I only got 6500mi from my RE010's... Get the S-03's for grip or keep
the RE010's im stock size for handling..

I have the S-03s and I love them. They grip as well, if not better than the 010s, and have a harder compound (i.e.; they should last longer). Overall, one of the best street tires I've ever owned (and I've owned or driven on most everything in 205/50/15 - Falken GRB, Comp TAZR, SP8000, AVS-i, RE730, but not the 712) The S-03 is definitely worth the money.
What the hell are you guys doing to your tires? I got 30,000 miles out of my original set of RE010's. That was mostly commuting miles, though. What finally killed my tires was my first autocross event which took its toll on them. I can see how repeated track days would drastically shorten the life of the tire.
Anyway, I replaced them with a set of RE730's and so far so good. From what I read, they have close to the same grip as the 010's especially later on in their lifecycle, and will last quite a bit longer. I'm still working through the initial break-in so they are still a bit squirmy, but the wet weather traction is a lot better. We'll see how they do on my first autocross with them next weekend...

Heh, i got about 8500 miles out of my RE010s, with about 7 autocrosses and a track day at nelson ledges. Probably could have gone to 10,000, but the tires were on the wear bars, and i wanted to mount my V700s...still, they had fantastic grip, and wore very well despite the abuse (some of the autoXs were on concrete).

Just rotated mine at 6000 miles I'll be lucky to get 10,000 miles out of mine.
My 010s lasted 11K. With regular rotation, they were well into the indicators, but still sticking.
A note on the S-03: ABSOLUTELY no tread squirm, even brand new! They felt like they were already broken in.

I'm running about 38 front and rear (that's what the tire guys put in) but that was straight off of the highway also.
will higher pressures really make these eraser heads stick?

For the street, on the 010s, I actually ran lower pressures (about 32-33 all around). This seemed to keep the wear pretty even, and I beat on those tires quite a bit. For auto-x and race, you have to do the roll-over test with some chalk to find the right pressures to run, as it will vary from tire to tire.

20,000 That's Kilometres, I'm guessing. That's about what I got from my first set of RE010's but you can't get them here in Australia.
I've got the new Yokohama's A539's. They'll last nearly twicw as long as the RE010's. With our climate and a couple of track days, it impossible to get more that a years driving with the RE010's. But the harder the rubber, won't hang-on aswell in the wet. You just can't have your cake and eat it too. I've had a couple of days of wet weather driving and they were pretty bloodly good. In the dry, they start talking earlier than the RE010's. So they don't hang-on aswell as the RE010's even in the dry & corner speed in down just a fraction.
Later.

20,000 MILES!!
I drive mostly highway miles. Of thse 20K, I probably put about 3,000 miles in the city, and two track days.

I'll cast another vote for the S-03s. They are expensive, but seem to be worth it. I still haven't had a chance to drive them in the rain though, but I understand they're great in the wet too.
The only other tire I've liked anywhere near as much as the S-03s and Re-010s are the AVS Intermediates. If you can find them they are great tires and now they are pretty cheap. The only downside is the won't last much more than the RE-010s.
