Default EGT temps.......what should they be ?

Running at idle its like at 800 or so, but on the freeway going 60mph in 5th gear taching at 4K rpm's its reading like 1600-1700 - NOT in boost.
That normal ?
EDIT: lol k i am a real moron, I took Jake aka JDM B-Series around last night and it didn't get above 1300 and that was after 6psi hitting 8200rpm. I even went cruising on the freeway and 1350 was about the highest we saw...........me = I guess i wasn't really paying attention.

I am sure this places a roll too...........The placement of the probe ? cause its like 1.5" away from runner 1.........i know i know , it was already tapped.

mine is like 4-6 inches away form the head in runner 1.. that may very well be the problem .. its too close the the head...

thats what i was thinking, what is the rule of thumb on runng rich/lean ?
lean = lower temps
rich = high temps
or vise versa ?
thanks

If your timing is retarded more than it should be, then you will get high egt temps. I was always told that the probe should be taped into the #3 runner. GSRev has his taped into his head and he gets nomal readings.

Mine is in the DP about 1-2" from the turbo. I get about 1100f on the highway at 70mph.

i don't know...whenever i run lean my egt gauge shoots up sky rocketing...but when i run rich my egt gauge is really low. maybe it's different for me since my probe in on my down pipe?

normally rich = low temps and lean = high temps but you can get high egt readings with an overly rich mixture if the unburnt fuel gets ignited near the sensor.

highest egt's come at 14.7:1 air fuel ratio. richer and the extra fuel cools the exhaust and any leaner and the combustion doesn't reach high temps due to lack of fuel. http://www.sdsefi.com/techegt.htm

Actually it's probably too far from the head. It should be on #3 runner, and distance from the head is half the diameter of your primary runner.

Is anyone using the Apex'i EL EGT gauge, the sensor for it is extremely long and I can't figure out how they expect you to mount it in a runner.

I also use the Apex EL egt. The probe is super long. I had to mock up a couple of the fittings so that it spaced it further out. I dont have any pics unfortunately. You could always have a bung welded to a short tube then welded to the manifold.....or even have the tube welded in on an angle so the probe will sit at an angle inside the runner.
BTW #3 runner as close to the head as possible is where you want your probe at.

Cursing on the highway I would be around 1300 to 1400 deg at 4000 to 4500 rpm I put the LS 5th gear in my car and besides it being at 3000rpm at 70 my egt are cooler around 1200 to 1300 deg.
