trouble removing power steering in 98 civic with d16y8.
So i removed the power steering belt and now it is a major bitch to turn. I've read about removing the whole pump and everything and looping a new line in or something. Also how do you drain the powersteering fluid? Most of the posts on this that i have found have been for integras. Does anybody have pics or a diagram from the helms manual or something on how to do this on my car?
bump i'm sure somebody has done this. When i'm draining the fluid which hose should i remove for it to shoot out of? help me please.
The general consensus is that you don't want to drain all of the fluid, since the fluid helps to keep the rack lubricated. As far as the posts on Integras, removing the system on a '98 Civic is extremely similar to the procedure for Integras. The main difference is that the two fittings are on the side/rear of the Civic rack, not the front like the Integra. There are tons of pictures in previous threads, and as I said, they are all quite applicable to the Civic rack as well.
It shoots out of both hoses!
Oh and remove the fricken resivior or at least empty it.
Turning the wheel either direction pumps out the fluid and sucks it from the resivior.
Padawan is making kits for 60 dollars to keep from damaging your steering rack it basically recycles the fluid through a smaller loop instead of the res.
*I guess it took me a little too long to type out huh?

damn it sounds like draining some of that fluid is gonna be a mess lol. So the resivior is the thing right beside the pump i believe? should i disconnect the hoses from the input and output on the rack to drain the fluid or leave the hoses on and let the fluid shoot out of them after taking them off of the pump? Also if i were to go to nappa or somewhere what exact fitting would i need for when i loop the new hose back around? Thanx for any help you have. I'm kinda confused, but slowly understanding

Yes, it can get slightly messy.

Correct.

As I said, I don't recommend draining the fluid, but if you choose to, disconnecting the lines at the rack will accomplish it.

The size is 14x1.5. Aeroquip makes the only proper fitting I currently know of (I'm sure there are others somewhere out there), and it requires two pieces: a 14x1.5 to -6 AN fitting, and a -6 AN to hose barb fitting.

thanx for the info man! Do you know anywhere i can go to get those parts or do i have to order them from that hose website that was on dropspeed's post? Also i'm not planning on draining all the fluid. I'm still leaving a little bit for lubricant.

ok so i took all of the fluid out of my resivior yesterday and i see where i am suppost to rig up the hose on the rack, but how do i get back there to do it? Do i have to reach it from under the car somehow? I'll hopefully be ordering those aeroquip parts soon.
Yes, on '96-'00 Civics, the only real way to reach the fittings is from under the car. The Civic rack is quite limited in terms of room to work.
