Prelude hesitation update
Hey guys, I'm sure most of you guys know about this so I wont take your time up explaining it.
I have been having this hesitation/lag/bog for over a year and have tried many things to remedy it. I recently saw a post on PO about a guy replacing his knock sensor to fix his, so I figured I'd try the same so I bought one from hparts.com. It came in today and I installed it earlier. Took the car for a drive and its back to running like it used to. The low end torque is back, the acceleration is smooth, and the motor pulls all the way to redline. Throttle response has also returned.
I suggest that everyone who has had this problem give this a shot if you've tried most everything else. The part number for a OBDI H22A is 30530-PV1-A01. Also use that if you have a JDM H22 like I do.
Hope this is of help to someone out there. This problem was a hugeeeee pain and made me consider selling the car many times.
EDIT: Just wanted to add that at no time during my hesitation problems did I throw any type of CEL. The knock sensor that I replaced was still shiny and appeared fine but obviously was not.

Hmmm, I make the hesitation disapear after replacing O2 sensor and cat. No more shaking and jumping in 2500-3000rpms area.
It's cool you succeeded

hey 4bidden thats good to hear ,, can u list all the stuff you tried before suceeding? i assume you did tried alot of things, but just throw up a quick list.
Yeah, I have some hesitation in the 3,000 range and I dont think it used to be there. I guess its possible that its due to my Apex'i WS exaust or my CAI intake maybe causing powere peaks and valleys? I am going to clean/oil my AEM CAI AirFilter + do the o2 sensor this weekend and HOPEFULLY that will do it...if not I will look into the knock sensor although your hesitation sounded severe so I may have a diff. problem here.
I'm curious about all the things you tryed as well the list would be cool.

Here are all the things I can think of that I tried.....
plugs
wires
cap
rotor
distributor
map sensor
injectors
fuel filter
o2 sensor
ecu
cam/ignition timing
tps
resistor pack
I think thats it....and I finally got it with the knock sensor.
I had a "lag" noticable in low rpms but it was causing poor running in all rpms. Now that I know it was the knock I was obviously feeling the ECU pull timing out. Throttle response was not good and low rpm torque went down.

wow you tried all that crap and finally the knock, so you REALLY notice a difference since you changed you knock sensor? it all makes sence though your right, if you knock was going then the ecu wouldn't set a CEL but pull the timing back. but i owuld think if the sensor was constatly telling the ecu that your motor is knocking that it would set a code kind of liek this case : https://honda-tech.com/zerothread?id=548532
As far as I know the knock will only throw a code if there is a break in the circuit. I'm sure the ECU just thought I was running like 87 octane or something and it kept knocking.

makes sense... my car has a knocking type sound in the engine, and it gets louder at around 2300 to 3200 or so, and that's also where the hesitation typically occures.. maybe the knock sensor is reading it falsely
UPDATE on my Mid-Range Hesitation:
I noticed some hesitation ESPECIALLY in the 3-4K range...
So...Sunday I finally cleaned my AEM CAI Filter after AT LEAST 6 months of NOT being cleaned. I cleaned it w/the K&N "recharge" kit which obviously wasn't intended for an AEM but I figured it would work and it DID!
Engine feels noticeably better under 4 grand and feels like the engine revs-up through all RPM ranges w/greater Ease - feels MUCH better.
So for anyone w/midrange hesitation who has a CAI - I highly recommend cleaning your AEM(or other) CAI Filter if its been awhile...best $10 I've spent on the car.
PS: I also was going to try doing the 02 sensor but didn't get to it...so hopefully that will still be of some benefit to?

You will never get the filter clean, unless you buy 10 recharger kits. Just buy a new one from K&N 35 bux

hmmm...its been almost a year since I have been driving my car daily, so its hard for me to remember.
Anyways I had always noticed a low end lag in my car, but if i remember it was from 2-3.5k or so. Top end was always strong, or at least it felt that way to me.
Did the car shake in the lower rpm's for you guys? jerk back and forth or something? Any kind of sound?
I ask because I might as well check out my knock sensor while it is in my friend's shop. I know I'm a newbie but...where is the knock sensor?
thx guys

Yeah, I don't think you'll be dissapointed ....I put it back on at like 11pm last night so I only got to test if for like 5 mi last night on the way home from my friends + then 15mi to work today but I thought it was significant. I'm going to have some fun w/it on the way home to confirm my findings.
I hope you get the same results -please reply back w/how it works out for you!!
PS: Are your Short-shifters still available? If so how nuch are they now - I think I saw a group buy either here or on PO.com where like 50 peeps were gonna buy it + possibly lower the price to the $100-range...???
THANKS!!

GB ended, we got 85 people paid and price was sub-100$ for that quantity. I'm sold out until further notice due to that huge buy though. Give me 3 weeks and PM me or something.

The K&N cleaning kit is in fact what AEM recommends.

HeartThrob:
Yeah there was some hesitation in the upper 2000's too but I just figured it didnt make much power down there, especially in the heat of the summer...
But NO there was NO SHAKING - except maybe once in a while when Idleing for a while...so you may have a diff Issue
CottonWoodz:
I dont know about the K&N FILTERS - I just used their cleaner kit - but anyway My AEM came clean you could see the filter element was black B4 and white afterwards - not a bad deal for 10 bux - looks pretty much new.
PS: Do you know where to get replacement AEM Filters + what the cost? Do K&Ns fit on an AEM CAI?
Thanks!

Yea, email me at 4bidden@***.net in about 3 weeks and we'll see what we can do. Also keep an eye out on eBay.

did u guys with the hesitation get the ignition switch recall?? they fix it for free and its supposed to stop the hesitation. they recalled all 97-2000 honda cars. go to hondamotors.com, and go to the owners section, and look into recalls, and u can put in ur vin number to see if your car has been fixed yet. it helped mine
