POrted and polished the b16 head this week. Well, didnt really port, just polished the casting and knife edged the dividers. Also installed new valve seals and ITR valve springs. Itr intake cam is going in too, and ill chip the PR3 so ill be shifting at 8400-8600 now. This head is goin on my 96 b18c. Ill post driving impressions once i get it all back together. Should be good for 10 HP right? Anyway...ill post the pics in a minute..let me know what you think

When you say you knife edged the dividers! what do you mean? it is the bit in the middle of the port? what would knife edging it acheive? only want to know cos im thinking of a diy port and polish myself!!

 

its where the runner turns into 2 ports. 1 for each valve. what he means by knife edged dividers is that he grinded where the runner splits to a knife edge thinness. to minimize turbulance, and maximize efficiancy and air flow velocity to achieve higher hp figures.

 

what kind of tools did you use

 

DIe grinder with the basic port/polish bits. Afterwards i went over it with some sandpaper to smooth it out a little.

 

Just curious, how did you clean it out?

 

cleaned as in? the whole head? if thats what u mean theres a special machine called a hot tank. cleans it up real good. has some solvent in there thats really hot. durh

 

Hot tanked it, takes about an hour but gets pretty much everything off

did you use the flow machine to test the flow of each port? My friend is honda mechanic, he said that if it flows uneven, you could damage the head and loss power. Just to let you know, before everyone starts porting their heads.

You took off you GSR head for a DIY ported b16 head and you hope to see 10hp? What about the lower CR because of the b16's bigger chambers?

 

Im making up for that by installing the b16 pistons, so ill have a 11.2 compression ratio.

 

Looks pretty dang good.

BTW, out of curiousity, what kind of car is the head laying in?

 

The car is a 89 Civic LX, thats right a four door. I posted some pics a couple months ago, heres the link.https://honda-tech.com/zerothread?id=506010 That was the week i did the swap, some stuff has changed. The battery is in the trunk, so the intake can fit, and currently theres no head on there. Im towing the car to Upgrade Engineering where they will install my b16 pistons and put everything back together!!! Ill give driving impressions soon.
