Default crush bent vs mandrel bent, is there really a difference

like the title says, is there a much of a difference? I just finished my B18C swap in my hatch, and the cx exhaust has to go. The problem is that i'm poor, and i was thinking about just going to a muffler shop and getting them to bend me some 2.5 inch piping and put on a magnaflow 2.5 inch muffler. The problem is that i have no cat. I was also thinking about getting the Pacesetter Monza exhaust...it's only 179, but it's also only 2.25 inch.....Also i was thinking about buying a Bomz or OBX exhaust system, but it's 250, and that would be all my money. help me out...

it does make a difference, but not too much, unless you're really pumping out some serious HP. there are plenty of people who make 200 to the wheels with the stock ITR exhaust, and that has some serious bottle necking going on.

buy a cheap race cat from ebay like i did. works great! and as for the exhaust system, just save up for a decent one. you don't want to waste money on a nasty one now and still have to buy a decent/better one later. my buddy is running b18c/vx hatch/stock exaust/mt slicks and he hit 13's all day.

i don't plan on running a cat....i had another idea. Considering that the main bends are over axel, how would it work if i just ran an axel back system with crush bent piping? thanks

ps keep in mind that i'm poor

pss...i'm not in any computer forums...i didn't there existed things as boring as that

You won`t notice a serious difference untill you hit 3"+ pipes and lots of HP. My piping guy showed me dyno results of both and there was minimal difference between the two, it`s prefrential, that`s all....

Just go with whats cheaper, ya know(but not in all cases).

In your case your stock piping is crush as it is so enlarging the diameter with crush will still give you come gains. And since your on a budget I assume you wont be hitting high HP numbers so go with whats cheaper.

well.....i do plan on doing I/H/E, cams, sk2 manifold.....and then maybe a 50 shot, but that's about it. What do you guys think about my axel back idea. Another thing, i found a pace-setter exhaust for $179, but its only 2.25 inch

You can't feel a difference just by driving. The difference would be less than 1 hp for N/A cars. Spend $200 on a crush-bent system, and put the other $300 towards something that will actually make a difference in power (say, new camshafts or a quality header).

if i were you id find a shop that can do mandrel bends, the difference shouldnt be that expensive.

if i remember correctly kteller8 was selling mandrel bent piping for about $200, send him a pm, or do a search for his thread in the FI Classifieds.

I just put my Kteller kit on and it's great, I have the magnaflow straight thru oval too. All said and done with getting it welded up and put on the car was $370. 2 1/2" Mandrel Bent exhaust bent to OEM spec absolutely no bottle necks.

370 is way too much......but how does that muffler sound?

Guys,

For what its worth, I use aluminized exhaust for a lot more than exhaust...... The local shop, just two guys about a mile from me in a rural area, have a hydraulic mandrel bending machine. They will put as many bends, anywhere I want on a "stick" (stick = ten foot length of aluminized tube) for 40 bucks....... I have used 1 1/2 inch thru 2 1/2 inch so far.

A month or so ago I was making a heat exchanger and they made a pretzel out of that stick. I just go up when they aren't busy, take a dozen donuts, drink their coffee, shoot the bull and leave with whatever I need. ... for forty bucks.

I have always wondered why so many of you have such a hard time getting this type of work done? I guess us rural folks have an easier go of this than you city guys..............

Regards,
BigMoose
