Default Dropping my tranny...

I gotta drop my tranny this weekend.
Besides the helms manual. anything i should know or pick up that will help me?

Also can i use a generic a generic release bearing? Acura wants 50 bux!
I calleed ACT, theres cost only $5!, lol He said a local auto store will prolly be 15.

Also is the tranny heavy? Can me and a friend pull it out? Or should i jack up the car reallly high and drop from the bottom?

A Helms should be just fine. It's basically unbolt everything in the way, unbolt tranny, and drop it. There might be a few hidden bolts and whatnot that you'll need the Helms for.

Yah, I'm sure you can use the ACT one. Because umm...I'm using one. But are you sure the $5 ACT one isn't the pilot bearing? $5 sounds kinda cheap for the throwout/release bearing.

You should have no problem with it. I suggest a friend anyway. What I do is take of all the intake stuff, linkages, etc. Put the motor part over a hydro jack and then unbolt the tranny mounts (and the rear mount). Then put your wheel with a protective cardboard covering on it under the tranny and have your friend hold it while you slowly wiggle it loose and lower it a few inches onto the rim. Then you can just slide it out.

It's not THAT heavy. It's just awkward to carry. I believe it's about 90-100lbs or so?

Here are some things i learned from my clutch rnr... btw thanks for the tail light gaskets ragejed.

jack the car up fairly high. on my 2ton jackstands they were on the 3rd or 4th notch.

just place a block of wood under the oil pan and exhaust pipe and place a jack (scissor jack worked for me) under the block of wood. you will be raising and lowering the engine to get the right angle to get the tranny off and the new one on.

drop the tranny using another jack with wheels and use the jack to put the new tranny on... just easier this way imo. I would say it roughly weighed about ~60-75lbs, not too heavy but definitely awkward to handle because of the shape and if you are under the car it's hard to handle. You will definitely want a buddy when putting the tranny back on. Getting the tranny to line up with the bolt holes was the hardest part imo.

pulling the radiator and fans will give you a lot more room to work with... might be a good time to flush the coolant anyways.

If you find the shift linkage pin a pain to punch out, you can remove the shifter linkage at the shifter end, and drop it with the tranny.

might want to use some blue thread locker on the flywheel bolts. you dont want them to loosen up after everything is put back together.

Clutch plate uses 10mm 12 point (you might need a deepsocket) and the flywheel uses 17mm 12 point... you might strip the bolts using 6point.

If you have a performance clutch and flywheel you might need some extra 10mm 12pt bolts for the clutch plate. Mine needed 3 extra.

grease the shift fork where the pivot ball thing is. and lightly grease (high temp grease) the throwout bearing shaft portion. I used whatever throwout bearing that came with exedy... no problems with it.
