Default tranny shims

has anyone ever had to use shims after replacing certain bearings in their transmissions? just curious because i have never had a problem with them, but i was considering doing it for this tranny that i'm building now: i'm replacing both diff bearings, which is what the shims are for.
any feed back?

iv used them... sometimes parts just dont sit at the correct heights... always check the clearances with the factory manual
