Removing engine
Well, it looks like I'll be getting a new engine (rebuilt d-series), and I was wondering how long the removal generally takes (for a first timer with some help)?
I'll need to take out the old engine, take off the trans, take the trans to get rebuilt, then I'll have some time to do some other work to the car while that's being done.
Will I need to disassemble the suspension to get the engine out? I know I have the take the axles out of the trans (obviously), but will I have the suspension disassembled enough that it would be worth my while to work on my bushings?
Any random tips? Any of the reinstallation particularly tricky? How difficult is retensioning the main belt? Should I replace the alternator while the engine's out (it seems fine now)?

Re: Removing engine (tylerdurden)
actually my first time it took me 2 hrs to take it out, bc i was by myself...
but isnt such a big deal
if u dont like the bottom engine removal like breaka,
just loose the wishbone thingy that holds the strut, the lower balljoint, and the knuckel will open like a books page.. that way u can take the axle out...

Re: Removing engine (breaka_1_9)
Nice writeup, I may go that way so I don't have to rent an engine hoist. You said the knuckles didn't have to be removed to get the engine out this way, but how would you have pulled the engine out if the hub assy was still in the wheelwell (pardon my ignorance). I understand that the whole assy swings away when the radius rods and axles are removed, but wouldn't it still kind of, you know, be in the way?
BTW, how hard is it to remove the front crossmember (please don't tell me the bumper needs to be removed)? Once the engine is resting on the holder, you must still have jackstand holding the car up for when the mounts are undone, yes?

Re: Removing engine (tylerdurden)
i am gonna add your question to my other post, but i will reply here, too...
well i don't know for a fact that they don't need to be removed, since i have done it this way 2 times now and both cars had the knuckles missing. i think if you jack the car up a little bit higher, you can slip the motor out without any problems. the more i think about it, the more i realize that i pull the motor out under the front frame rail, so the knuckles wouldn't be in the way (i am pulling the motor out more towards the front).
you just need a breaker bar, a 17mm socket and that is it. the crossmember comes out without taking the bumper off.
actually i had a jack holding the car up. the car is so low that jackstands would keep the car too high. i used a 2x4 across the front tow hooks and a jack to keep the car up. i think a 4x4 would work better since the 2x4 flexed some, but you would need a very low profile jack...
