Default Wheel Hop Reduction....

Hi. Since i got my clutch / flywheel, I get to about 7k in 1st gear and the tires start to break lose.... 2nd gear, it's just a complete wheel-hopping burnout. I know z10 made some fender bars (not sure the name) that are supposed to elimiate a lot of that, but a friend told me another manufacturer (I believe he said J's) makes them too for about half the price.

Anyone have some info on how to get rid of the massive wheel hop? I did some searching, didn't find the answers I was looking for... even though I've seen a lot in the past.

Thanks in advance.

Probably, firmer engine mounts, better suspension, and better tires (wider and stickier) all can help.

This is the 'Inner Fender Support Bar'

- goes behind/under fender
- stiffen chassis for handling
This is Z10 'Radius Arm Bars'

- bolts under front-end and to the front lower control arms
- keeps lower control arms from flexing foward during launches and normal driving

stiffer engine mounts could help out with the wheel hop.

i dont think that would work for some reason. i think new lighter control arms and stickier wider tires would do the job

Jim fab also makes something similar to the z10 traction cross member... I've heard it was better than the z10.

yea ive heard good things about the jimfab
plus its cheaper and looks better than the z10.

get a set of traction bars plus stickier tires that dont have a stiff sidewall.
i've heard the motor mounts work for some people, but i dont have experience with them.

so i'd say:
jimfab traction bar
BFG drag radials or slick (or just better tires for street)

motor mounts if you want i guess

good luck

hmmm...
Installed Quiafe LSD - Wheel hop increased
Installed sticker tires (Potenza S03's) - Wheel hop increased
Installed suspension (stiff 400lb springs and Konis) - Wheel hop unchanged
Installed ES Motor Mount Inserts - Wheel hop increased, Car bucking increased.

This sucks

Are you guys replying to this thread actually experienced with what your suggesting? It just seems most replys here are saying "yeah probably motor mounts will help" How do you know? Have you tried them yourself or are you just repeating nonsense that you read from other people?

I have driven a turbo LS with 250-270whp that had less wheel hop than my 175whp GSR...

The only difference is that the LS had the Z10 traction bars.

Also, my (somewhat limited) experience with motor mount inserts and the like is that it's not worth it unless the car you put them in is not a daily driver.

Hmm.. something just isn't right w/ ur car then..

1. When I put in my quaife wheel hop was definetly reduced ALOT..
2. I've had GC's/konis for a while, didn't really make a diference..
3. ES mount inserts, again I've had them for a while but they DO make a difference..
4. Stickier tires w/ a LARGER sidewall is the key.. Again, they DO reduce wheelhop..
5. Another thing that seems to have helped a little is the ES master bushing kit for the front control arms. Mine were pretty shot though before..

With these things there shouldn't be much wheel hop. If you're running 17" wheels EXPECT it to be worse. I don't have traction bars and I don't get much wheel hop.

Again though, you don't want a small sidewall. Small sidewall = lots of wheel hop.

I hear ya muckman. I've had the same experience as you. I think the z-10 radius arms (or equivilent) is the only real wheel hop fix. Of course the sidewall of a drag slick would absorb some too, but I want the wheel hop gone around the street, too!

I have the Z-10 kit on my b20vtec powered '94 hatch(itr powered for now), as well as 17" wheels and BFG drag radials, and the ES motor mount inserts. I have NO wheel hop! It hooks up pretty good. If I get the tires spinning, it's a very smooth affair. If you're toe is out of alignment, this will add to the hopping, in my EXPERIENCE.

My LSD was actually my 2nd mod to my '00 GSR. Before the LSD I had little or no hop. After the LSD, I really dont remember cuz it was almost 3 years ago, but it seems like it was largely unchanged. The biggest increase in wheel hop was after I switched from the stock tires to Potenza S03s. I DID go with a slightly smaller profile 195/50 opposed to stock 195/55 - both on 15" wheels. I agree with the smaller profile affecting wheel hop but I think for large part the tire compound is to blame. They just never broke free cleanly. In the rain, or on dry road, high rpm dump or low. Hopity hop hop.

You guys who are posting that you fixed your wheel hop, please list what tire and size your running.

What happens during acceleration is that the engine will flex and pull up on the suspension

That link has a pretty good explination of wheel hop. But I stil think there are other factors at play. I cant help but think tires play a huge role in wheel hop. I think some tires break free cleaner.

Does anybody have any theories why the same solution doesnt solve the same problem on all the same cars?

do you drive you car on the street..? anything bad about it..? sucks if you get in a moderate accident if the front..something that would just bend your frame a little would now probably crack your lower control arms..or maybe just bend them a little but...

Strictly street driven. The only bad is the stock wheels rub at the turn limits. Did it once or twice, then not since. I was told bigger wheels won't rub, but I won't know for sure until spring when the 17's go back on. Accidents are what insurance is for. On a positive note, NO wheel hop!

I'd be careful about engine mounts cause if you get polyurethane you should understand that your car will vibrate like none other. My friend got an LS swap and the mounts are so thick that all vibrations are transfered right into the cabin and it can make things much noiser. I mean if you're hardcore then it's cool, but the ladies might not like it.
