Default Fact or fiction: Race fuel on the ground = loss in octane

Is it true that when you store race fuel on the ground, it loses octane points?

If you store it anywhere long enough, VP will turn to junk. I lost a motor and proved to myself that it was the fuel's fault. Never buy VP out of a 55 gal drum. Knowledgable shops will sell it to you in 5 gal cans.

any idea on the length of time it will go bad. I have a 15 gallon drum now for about 6 months, would you run it or at least drive around to break the motor in with low boost, say around 15 psi

I finally figured out my problem when I used the same fuel to start another motor. Would barely run and smoked like crazy. Drained the gas and put in pump and motor started and ran perfectly. Your VP could be ok but I know I would never use it.

well, i don't think it is that the fuel loses its octane but more like builds up moisture. i do know that when storying a 55 drum you want to elevate it off the "cold ground" with some 2x4s. the gelling might be from the moisture that it builds with in the can. i do know that if you store the fuel correctly it will last over a year. just keep the lid tight, don't store in a cold place, and keep it off the ground. these are things i have seen work to keep fuel useable.

also check out http://www.vpracingfuels.com and maybe email someone there to get the correct info.

I will only buy them in 5 gal cans plus they are great for putting used oil in

There's also a system to remove the condensation from the fuel that causes it to go bad.
