Quick question, is there a way to tell if a transmission has Lsd without having to open it up, and without installing it. I have a friend who just bught a JDM "Type R" tranny and needs to know asap. thanks in advance for answering my n00b question.

 

Jack up the front and turn one wheel. The other side should be spinning the other way.

 

 

How about before having the tranny installed, anyway to tell if it doesn't have the LSD stamping?

 

look through the axle hole... i hear there should be no bar. it should be straight through

 

This may not work. Put the car in gear, and then turn the wheel. It should then spin the opposite direction. The other wheel may spin either direction if the car is not in gear.

Just read tranny is not in yet. Just look through the axle holes, there is no pin. You should be able to see straight through.

i said without having it installed, so there is no way to make it run, explain the tranny hole to me again???? the jspec ones dont have the lsd stamping.....

 

That's not the way to test for an LSD. That's the test to see if the LSD in operating correctly.

Open differentials spin oppisite direction too.

If you want to know whether you have an LSD, do a burnout with the wheels straight, you'll hear both tires spin. And... punch the gas going around a corner (you'll feel it - do it safely)

The best way to see it, is to take the tranny off and look through the midshaft/axle hole. If you can see straight through it, you have an LSD. If you see something in the middle, that's an open diff.

 

see where the axle goes, you should be able to see through it clearly with no bar, mine might be hard to see but there is a white thing on the under the tranny.

 

 

is there any difference between the jdm and usdm trannies, becaues I bought this one from an acura dealership and they told me it was a jdm type R tranny. and there is a pin running through the axle hole, can anybody help???

 

the one in the pic is a JDM tranny.. looks like you dont have LSD. better go back to dealership.
